waloszek Posted September 1, 2013 Share #61 Posted September 1, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here is the first version of my page about manufacturer-specific Exif data for the Leica X Vario. It contains already some information about focus modes and distance: Leica X Vario: Manufacturer-Specific Exif Data Best regards, Gerd

colonel Posted September 1, 2013 Share #62 Posted September 1, 2013 John,It appears in your photos that the camera is back focusing. So is mine when the problem presents itself. Never front focusing. not sure about that, in the first oof picture John shows everything is out of focus qu: do you see it is out of focus on the LCD or does it look in focus ? I have had a few incidents when it doesn't look in focus on the EVF or LCD so I refocus.
symmetron Posted September 2, 2013 Author Share #63 Posted September 2, 2013 I get a number of photos that are also just plain out of focus as well.
barjohn Posted September 2, 2013 Share #64 Posted September 2, 2013 I have plans to run some more formal tests. I still see it produce out of focus images at unexpected times, like tonight when I was at a home shooting posed pictures and it kept missing focus for no apparent reason. If I hadn't been chimping I wouldn't have known it until it was too late. Among the theories are that the camera converts the color images to grey scale for AF and it the resulting contrast is weak it will fail to focus properly. The other theory had to do with whether the high contrast elements were vertical or horizontal. In testing AF on a 10% grey target the camera was able to achieve AF pretty consistently. I had to drop to 5% grey scale target to cause it to miss AF and then only in spot mode. I 1-Point it was able to find AF (though it took longer) in almost every case. I now want to test where the low contrast image is color image close to human flesh color and see it it does the same thing. I haven't had time and may not have time until I return from a business trip, but I will see what I can do.
colonel Posted September 2, 2013 Share #65 Posted September 2, 2013 One thing I have learnt to do with every camera is only focus on high contrast changes, even if it means slight recompose. The worrying thing is whether the XV is reporting green when it is in fact red in the examples given above. Yesterday I was shooting with a X100S and it had many failures to acquire focus but always showed a red square. This is probably all a software issue, theoretically contrast detect focus is virtually impossible to get wrong as the camera is focusing on the real effect rather then the theoretical one as in phase detect or even RF manual focus. silverwren Posted August 2, 2015 Share #66 Posted August 2, 2015 I just purchased a used X Vario about 2 weeks ago. It is in excellent condition. I realize I am still learning the camera but overall, I am disappointed. I am experiencing some of the same problems focusing that I had with a little Nikon Coolpix. I generally shoot a Nikon D3 or Leica M3 so I am used to manual and autofocusing and generally get sharp photos. I see this thread ended a while back so I guess this was originally posted when the camera was new on the market. Was this issue resolved? Did a trip to Leica fix anything? I really want to love this camera. Any updates and/or encouragement. Thanks.
Une première mise à jour de l'X Vario déjà apparu en 2014. symmetron Posted August 4, 2015 Author Share #68 Posted August 4, 2015 In my case Leica replaced the camera as it was relatively new. However, I've read that a trip to the service department generally improves the focusing situation. YMMV.
asiafish Posted August 4, 2015 Share #69 Posted August 4, 2015 Did you update firmware to 1.1?
RickP Posted August 9, 2015 Share #70 Posted August 9, 2015 I have been a semi pro photographer for over 50 years..published and awarded many times. I have had my XVario for over a year now..never had any problems other than a few specs of dust (which show up only at high f stops and can be easily eliminated in post process) . I noticed when getting my Photographic Art Show together for a Gallery early this summer - that most of the best looking photographs were taken with the XV. I have 2 other cameras which I use. A 24 meg full frame Sony A900 with Zeiss Glass and a 24 meg full frame Sony A7 also with Zeiss glass.. I was amused to see that best of my work - enlarged on 12x18 metal prints .. came from the much maligned 16 meg APC Sensor XV. It is not a rapid fire - hi tech camera with amazing specs, but it is an amazing camera.

It is not a rapid fire - hi tech camera with amazing specs, but it is an amazing camera. Yesterday I went out with my X Vario. It is indeed not a rapid fire, has not the latest technology, but outperforms my M8 in IQ, certainly in the higher ISO's in lower light conditions, despite the slower lens. Never have had any issues with my camera. Ideal for travel because I do not have to carry around a body and a few lenses to carry with me. It is one of the most underrated Leica camera's and so easy to use. Really happy with it Best
Keith (M) Posted August 9, 2015 Share #72 Posted August 9, 2015 I have extolled the stunning quality of the X-Vario's lens in other posts, but a shot I took last week has again reminded me of just how good it is. The first shot is an OoC .jpg, reduced to 950px & 250kb. I had posted a b&w version on a different forum and someone commented that it was a pity that one could not easily read what had been wrapped around the post. TBH, I had not even noticed there was writing there until it was pointed out! Curiosity aroused, I made a mighty crop - see second image. Opinion re the X-Vario's IQ confirmed! Welcome, dear visitor!
