New to Leica SLR's Purchased R4s body. New Battery fitted

Works fine with Tamron adaptall and adaptor but with Leica Vario Elmar 28-70 only works on '100' and 'B' settings, ie those setting which do not require battery power. At other settings, shutter fires once then wind on lever jams until speed dial set to '100' or 'B' then shutter fires and lever released .

As far as I can see the lens has the required control cam as shown in the instruction manual.

HELP PLEASE

Hello Lily,

Welcome to the Forum.

You might try to locate a more extensive R4 or R4s manual in a used book store. You might even find a manual that deals with all, or a number of the R's beginning with R4. The R3 & the various Leicaflexes are different.

You might also look under "Repair Specialists" in the "Sticky" in "Collectors & Historica" to try to locate someone in your area of the World.

Hopefully it will be a simple fix like an oxidized electical contact or something like that..

Best Regards,

Michael

It sounds like it may be an electrical / electronic fault .

However it is weird that it works fine with a Tamron , is that on all speeds and settings ?

Can you try another Leica lens on the camera ? Though as mentioned I think the lens unlikely to have an effect .

I have know similar trouble on a Nikon FE and an R4 .

Thanks for your replies so far.

Yes Tamron works in all modes at all speed settings.

There are no electrical connections on the Elmar or the tamron adaptor that I can see.

All my other Leica lenses are M mount or LTM.

At first I thought that the rear of the lens was jamming the mirror but not so.

When the wind on lever jams, removing the lens shows mirror in return position, and lever does not 'unjam' until 100 is selected and shutter fired.

It seems that shutter is not the problem as it appears to be cocked and ready, but the wind-on which jams and prevents the button being depressed except on the two battery independent speeds.

Total mystery

There are no electrical conections from the R4s to the lens , so no contacts needed. The R4s only conects mechanicaly to the lens.

I am wondering if the back of the lens may be damaged , but I think it is an electronic problem inside the camera unfortunately.
