No, No and No

No I have not ordered or received a camera, let alone a M8, from Amazon (Is Amazon a authorised Leica dealer?).

No new firmware except 1.092.

No the filters have to be ordered using the camera serial number. Just how would Leica AG know what size filters to include.

Hmmm. I didn't realize Amazon.com was not authorized to sell Leica cameras. Are you saying you don't think Leica will honor their warranty for camera's bought from Amazon.

As for the filters.. I guess I meant does the filter offer now come in the box. Do people that buy now - post December 31st - receive the free filter offer?

My understanding is that there is a leaflet in the box, letting the buyer know how to order the filters. There are no filter included with the camera, as this wouldn't make sense.

Amazon ships M8's from their own warehouses, at the same price as everyone else, and also refers you to Adorama and Calumet, which are authorized sellers. And they offer a two year service plan, which seems unnecessary since US Leicas come with a 2 year warranty. I can't imagine them getting their stock from anyone except Leica USA, which would make them also an authorized seller. But don't expect any help or additional information from them. I would recommend buying from a local dealer that you can go back to if anything goes wrong, or from one of the web sellers with a personal touch, like Popflash, or from B&H or ... you can find many suggestions if you read the threads about new arrivals on this site.

Any purchaser of a new M8 is entitled to receive 2 free filters, which can be ordered as part of the online registration process for the camera. I don't believe there is any expiration date for this offer, since the filters will be needed for as long as this model is in use. It's not a sales incentive, like a rebate, but a solution to the technical problem of excess IR sensitivity creating false colors.

Slightly off topic, but I think germane to the OPs post, the online registration is only for the filter offer and does not serve to register the camera for warranty purposes. The enclosed postcard needs to be submitted for the camera to be registered.

  • 3 weeks later...

Advertisement (gone after registration)

I ordered a black M8 from Amazon on Sunday night. Free shipping delivered it to the wilds of New Hampshire yesterday, Wednesday, morning.

It has the flier with instructions for obtaining the free filters after registering online.

Firmware says 1.09, serial # 3110XXX.

When I powered it up, and before I set it correctly, the date said March 7, 2007. I wonder if that means it came off the production line around 10-12 weeks ago?

I would have just as soon bought it from B&H for whom I have the highest regard. The 30 day Amazon return policy, and to a much smaller degree free shipping, made the decision for me. If there's a defect and have to return it, or if my wife finds it, I can get authorization online.

B&H has a very reasonable return policy too, but they expect you to call and talk to a real live New Yorker.

I don't think that is necessary. I only registered online and still have my cards, I was contacted by Leica directly for the upgrade, and a few weeks ago, when one of my bodies needed tlc on warrantee I only had to call Solms to get it collected the next day.

It may be however, that Leica USA handles things differently from Leica Solms.

There was a posting specifically related to filling out the cards.

That poster spoke to someone in NJ and those guys don't get any info from Germany when you register your camera. The person the poster spoke to specifically asked that he mail in the card.

I mailed mine in after seeing the post.

It can't hurt. That is, the registry card probably won't be worth much as an antique. :)

It seems everything is easier in Europe :p:D Or more slap-happy, if you prefer...

Jaap--

Just curious: What's easier there?

In the US, we get the camera, then mail the warranty card to inform Leica that that body is sold and that I'm the owner. Later, if the camera is stolen, New Jersey has a record of my name, address, serial number. And there's an immediate record there if I need warranty repairs, eliminating the need for me to send proof of purchase etc.

(If a dealer can talk me into sending him extra money for an extra warranty, that's just extra profit for him.)

Is that different in Europe?

Oh, and of course Amazon is a Leica dealer. Leica doesn't allow trans-shipping. (And on the volume that organizations like Amazon do, trans-shipping would be noticed quickly.)

That's the same serial number range as the chrome one I got from Popflash last week. They installed the latest firmware before shipping it to me.
