Copyright Information

My take on copyright information is that the main use is to let the bloke that is stealing your image know that he is stealing....:o

The same with watermarks - useless since the advent of content-aware healing brushes...

Mine too, and to let them know I take it seriously.

Paul, I respect your concerns, but the angst you generate works against you, not the perpetrator. Who do you really know that has been financially succesful in prosecuting such an infringement?

What William is pointing out is that to bring legal action to actually defend your right the work really needs to be registered. The FAQ page is quite helpful on the gov site.

Thanks Karl, yes. I was told by a copy right attorney, free class in SF sponsored by APA, that it is the only way one can get damages and compensation.

It's interesting, in a good way, that Kodak is fighting this. in other words, copyright is copyright and one should be able to seek compensation whether it has been registered with a any bureau or not.

There was a post here not that long ago, where we discussed it would be great, if somehow but seemingly impossible to have a format that self destructs in certain situations.

I have had a number of occasions where high res files have turned up in peoples hands. It stems mainly from theft at the point of delivery. There are so many people that get a hold of them down the chain; agencies, designers, printers, magazines, PR's, and all their assistants in between. You're really at the mercy of people honesty in this situation.

It's a problem that could be solved, in theory, with a file type built for short term delivery only. Though others who are more qualified to comment have said it's impossible to create a file like that. I'm sure, or at least live in the hope it will turn up in some form and at some point down the track. It just makes sense and I think would be useful, not in eliminating it but helping with some. Particularly with high res delivery.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Digimarc offer a service that you use through adding details in Photoshop (but annoyingly not Lightroom) which will inform you if your image is being used anywhere on the Internet. Is this correct and if so does anyone have any experience of its effective use?

I do and it worked.

I don't use Photoshop anymore..........:(
