likalar Posted July 24, 2013 Share #1 Posted July 24, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) M9, 135 Elmar. Thanks for taking a look. Here's a closer view of the Italian entry, the Luna Rossa AC72, with Alcatraz Island beyond. This boat/crew had a more difficult time getting the hydrofoils to lift both hulls from the water yesterday, and it finished several minutes behind the New Zealand boat. One of the goals of the 2013 Cup venue was to make the races more easily viewable to the public. The race course runs fairly close to the city waterfront, and there are dozens of public viewing areas. I was standing on the public Muni fishing pier, near Ghirardelli Square. The first of the big AC72 (72 ft length) boats, owned by Team Oracle, was launched late last year. Until then, several AC45 (45 ft. length) boats of similar design had been campaigned around the world, for the America's Cup World Series. The AC45 was designed to break down and fit into a shipping container, to allow for world-wide venues. Several teams took part, and gained valuable experience on big cat boats with fixed-wings. The AC 72 (intended for both the 2013 Luis Vuitton Challenge and the America' Cup) has a crew of 11, and has proven to be quite a challenge to sail in strong conditions. Unfortunately for potential competitors, they are extremely expensive to build. A competitive campaign is estimated to cost $100 million dollars. As a result, very few teams signed up. Here's a link to a video of the first AC72 capsizing on SF Bay late 2012. ORACLE TEAM USA 17 Capsize - YouTube Larry Welcome, dear visitor!
