All my third party batteries do work normally but i have to discharge them fully in the camera before recharging them to avoid false meter readings. The only way to avoid this is to purchase Leica batteries.

I've had terrible experience with 3rd party batteries. They work fine for 4 or 5 charges, then go funky. By funky I mean that they won't charge and seem to freak out the charger. Weird blinking of the charge light -- you just know they can't be good for your camera. And I discharge them fully in the camera. I know they look like a great deal - but you get what you pay for.

So have any 3rd arty batteries gotten any better? I need t replace some of mine and wonder if anyone has made any that do work more than a few times.

I have been using mine for a few years now. They perform as well as the original Leica battery I have. The ones I have only say "Battery pack for Leica M8", I don't know their brand name and chances are the same battery is marketed under several brands or without one anyway.

How are third party batteries discharged properly in the camera?

Shooting photos you don't need will increase the number of exposures and the shutter might wear out faster.

Changing the camera into the mode in which the camera is always on, might not be good for the sensor and the other electronic parts.

I don't shoot photos i don't need. I just shoot normally until the camera stops.

So do I, but sometimes you should start a foto tour with fresh batteries, as the battery always stops, when the best scenes won't wait until you have changed it. (Murphy's Law :D)

Even with new original batteries it's recomended to discharge the batteries completely for the first three charge cycles, so the question is whether it's possible to discharge batteries outside the camera safely?

The original battery in my Day old M8 that was maybe at 80 % charge died after some 30 shots. So now charging it fully- but better to get a new Leica battery eh? Expensive little things they are. Wanted to get a nice leather strap and saw the battery prices!

Aftermarket batteries give false readings in the M8 right?

Ok- so lens jar and battery jar.

Still like the M8. :D

Is the compact battery charger worth it? I have the bulky leica one that's almost as big as the camera!

Hi,

So the original battery that came with my M8 is the embossed kind. There is a crack on bottom that faces the spring side and you can see the metal inside and also the battery cover is loose. Is there a danger of it shorting or being in contact with spring? So kept it out and got a new M8 battery at Leica store.

This one is not embossed. Has the details printed on the contact side. On the other side where its usually embossed is label to recycle and writing in Russian. It indicates the correct mAh as 1860.

Are these the new Leica batteries? OEM versions? Is this correct? No mistake with what I got?

The spare battery that came with the camera was an aftermarket no branded as its 1700mAh. So if I can't use the old original- I think I need another?

Can I use rubber electrical tape and keep using the old Leica original? Or should I chuck it?

Ok three Leica M8 Battery photoshoot. :p

Leica original in embossed glory in middle. On top is aftermarket one that came with M8 and below is the brand new M8 Leica Battery I got at the Leica shop today.

Next pic is of new Battery where I thought would be embossed has label and Russian. (Russia is big market for Leica? The Russian President is a Leica fan rt?) and then next side is the label that says Leica and indicates the Voltage and Amph.

Last Pic is old Leica original showing her insides. :(

Im in Vienna, Austria so maybe its for Russia market? Box says made in the EU. :D maybe sign that Russia joining the EU!

Can one still buy the embossed batteries?

Pics please.

I also saw another post by doolittle saying that he got a battery from dealer that had printed label. So guess thats new batteries now. So i guess my question answered.

Although do you think its safe for me to tape up the cracked hole on the original battery and keep using it? Id rather use the original then some no- named brand that may give bad readings and mess up the camera. Also liked that its embossed- and i guess now not very common it seems.
