I love the 75 Summilux,

Even at 1/25 with the potential for a little movement it is superb at night, ISO 800, 1/25th at 1.4. It's interesting the way this lens creates 'inky blacks' makes no sense to me from a science way, but this shot was printed for a card for my partner (Olive our little whippet) and the blacks looks blacker next to other prints

What is the vignetting like when wide open, and the distortion, on the 75 Summilux?

Is it anything like the 1.0/50 Noctilux?

The 75 vignettes quite a lot less in practice in my experience, just dug out the lens sheets and Putts books, 50 Nocti 3.2 stops, 75 1.4 1.7 stops

Looking at the graphs the Notcilux is only 17% at 20mm, the summilux is 38%, these move to 40% and 55% at 15mm

Distortion with the 75 is a lot less too

Thanks for posting this information, very useful.

I must add that the rendering and soft colours of the 75 Summilux seem identical to the 1.0/50 Noctilux. If it wasn't for the more intimate FOV with these portraits I'd swear that I was looking at photographs taken with the Noctilux

The going rate for a late model, German-made copy in good condition is probably about $3600 now; you may pay a little more if it's coded. The Canadian version (identical) trades at a discount. I bought mine in mint condition (factory coded) at the top of the market for $4300 but I have no regrets. I use it a lot and it's my favorite lens for portraits.

Another option for the M240 is the Lux 80R. Basically identical to the Lux 75, quite a bit heavier but you save $1k or more. I have both lenses but don't have the M yet. Using the 75 on M9 and the 80 converted for Sony A99. Much easier to nail focus wide open on the A99 with LV and focus peaking.

i just bought a 75 Lux from a forum member on here. Since i already have a 50 Lux ASPH, i wanted a different look.

this is a pic of my girl shot at 1.4, on the day i got the lens. lovely bokeh.

i brought it to leica on that very day to get it coded and adjusted to my camera. cant wait to get it back and shoot some more.

Coding perhaps but adjustment? Looking at the photo... none needed!

Great shot.

My opinion,in a nutshell:

  • Summicron: perfect, razor sharp - budget considerations apart, if you don't mind a very slightly slower lens, my eyes could not see much difference (if any) between this lens and the "lowly" Summarit. And the Summarit is easier to handle IMO.
  • Summilux: big & heavy, slow and quirky to focus - but magic when you get it right. One of the very last lenses I would part with.

Thanks all for your comments. As I transition from shooting with my R8/DMR 80 Lux kit to a M version; M9-P & 75 Lux, I'm sure to learn a bunch of new ways to bring the virtues to the fore.

That's quite a kit! The R-package is bound to deliver in decent lighting as well.. Hope you can keep both.

I saw a comparison online, getdpi I think, with the Summilux shot and 1.4 and the Summicron at f2. The differences looked negligible in terms of Bokeh but the jpgs were tiny so hard to tell.

Has anyone, who owns both, done such a comparison and would mind sharing their findings? Ideally the same shot with the two lenses Summilux @ 1.4 and Summicron @ 2.

Hi Ben - the 75mm lux is my favorite lens, even though I don't use it most often. I have never used any other 75mm. I have, however, owned the 90mm cron APO. I found it superbly perfect in every way from a clinical perspective. I thought it was much more useful in the hands of a Vogue photographer, so I sold it.

I suspect that the 75 cron will provide a lot more contrast than the lux. But I find the soft contrast of the Lux what makes it so special. It seems to have been designed with female and child faces in mind. And you know better than anyone about the bokeh porn potential of the luxn, as you are one of Amercia's top bokeh porn stars :)

Having said all of this, since the 80 lux and 75 lux as essentially the same, if you are looking for any kind of diversity, the 75 cron would seem the way to go. I've seen by far much more positive remarks than negative on this forum...

In an idle moment I thought that I'd have a look at a couple of shots taken on the 75 Summilux and 75 Summicron - both at around f/8 to 11ish (I cannot remember precisely and exif data is approximate too). I used to own the 80 Summilux and was impressed by its performance stopped down - a very precise but not harsh lens I always thought. Anyway I expected the 75 to share this characteristic but also wondered just how well it would fare when compared with the Summicron. Most comments I read and images I see are based on wide open performance, which whilst useful is only indicative of the partial use of either lens. So FWIW here are two shots which whilst very different, both illustrate the image detail available from each lens (on an M9) - the yacht is off the Summicron whilst the posters is from the Summilux - not comparing central performance as much as 'general' performance. If I'm honest, both are more than acceptable performers and I'd happily use either well stopped down. [Jpeg limitations apply of course and the images have had no sharpening applied at all].
