APO Summicron 50/2 ASPH: Central veiling flare / fogging

No information on when mine will be done. It will arrive back when it does.

We have no information on what is being done and there's little point speculating but the fact it is being handled separately to normal service work suggests the lens is being rebuilt, perhaps using new parts. I doubt there has been a flood of lenses as there has been no general recall (unlike the lugs problem) so the lead time may have more to do with waiting for parts than volume of work.

Speculation, as I say, my repair status is showing "In Repair". In the meantime, I'm very much enjoying my chrome M Typ 240 and 50mm Summilux ASPH.

Mark,

Serious question for you, as hidden in the back of my mind is still an idea about getting this lens.

So they often say that the worst thing that can be done to someone is to take away something they already had. So accepting the frustration of having your 2.0/50-APO-Summicron taken away, and you'renow back with the M240 and 1.4/50 Summilux, are you really missing the performance of the Summicron?

I've just been out yesterday with my 1.4/50 Summilux on the M240, and today on the Monochrom and am reviewing these glorious photographs so I'm still not sure whether I'm missing out on anything.

The Summicron certainly won't make me a better photographer

For what it's worth, mine will be back tomorrow. Was sent back to Solms on 20 August. Took 2 months to be fixed with not much information given in the meantime. As far as I know they have entirely rebuilt the front lens with new parts. Good luck and patience for those waiting, I know how frustrating it is.....

Good luck!

I wonder if that lens would work well on the Sony A7R?

So you sent your lens back before there was any official announcement from Leica. It may be that part of those two months coincided with the stop in production and development of a solution.

A few months ago i spoke with a former worker that used to build the famous Kern macro switar, for Alpa.

He owns now a photographic shop in Zurich and was very proud to tell that in his time at the factory, when a part had say an allowed variation of some hundred's of a millimeter they tried (and succeded) to fall exactly in the middle of the allowed variation.

Then he went on to say that little by little the cost of the very highly skilled workers and the aim to high benefits induced similar precision companies to hire less skilled workers and address problems after, when people would return the camera or lens for problems.

All in all the financials found it was less costly for the company that way.

I wonder if the number of glitches and returns for repair at Leica is not the result of kind of a similar policy.

Sorry for my ignorance, but has there been an official Leica announcement about the central flaring? I know about this statement, but this can hardly be said to be an official statement.

You are right of course, Leica have been dragging their feet over this - bit like the M accessories debacle, really - and there is no announcement that I know of. However, the internet being what it is, the interview with the CEO seems to be a tacit admission that all is not well - for "4 small changes", read "rebuild" which is why I decided to send the lens in; Leica have accepted it, it's in repair for zero charge.

I just received word from the dealer that my 50APO should be back from the factory in November. I sent it in during September. At least I can use it now since I finally received my M.

Did your dealer impart what they did to your lens from the paper work he received?

I can't imagine NOT sending this lens in to Leica even if you haven't experienced flare yet. I would be concerned that there is an important rebuild in the works for all returned lenses. I took it one step further and returned the lens to my dealer for a refund. I'll wait on the sidelines while you other guys stay in the game.

This does work, right up until customers buy some other brand. Very hard to rebuild a business after that. Of course execs get big bonuses for the short term profits increase.

May I offer General Motors as an example. Other imported brands were were dismissed as no threat. One exec was given bonuses after he retired, Roger Smith.

GM cars are much improved now, but few customers have returned. Young people just bypass the showroom and that is the lifeblood of the business. The current CEO had a piece in WSJ saying another bankruptcy is not far.

Alpa is ,of course , long gone.

After three months or so of casual but frequent use, in differing lighting situations, my APO 50 doesn't seem to have this problem, however, as I follow this thread, I can't stop (paranoidly) imagining that I must be missing something.

I wonder how many of these lenses there are out there that do not suffer from the dreaded flare fault. We seem to hear only about those that do.......

What would worry me is does mine have this defect or is it normal ? Rather than worry, I did not buy one. For $7500 it had better be space satellite perfect. Oh wait, they can not even give correct specs to the people who ground the mirror so a space mission was required to add a corrector. And we have lost a few crews sadly.

A camera lens should be simple to check before shipping.

The way the ego manic bureaucrat ousted the GM CEO was just over the top. I will never buy one of their cars since it is now Obamamotors.

Agree. I am just waiting to hear how the "rebuilt" ones fare before sending mine in to them.

The Leica Repair Tracking Site… at first it gave repair status updates when provided with the serial number of the item being repaired. Now it just gives a blank page. I wonder what's up with that?

Leica Camera AG - Service - repair tracking

Usually a blank page means nothing is being done. There too busy doing QC on Varios.
