Advertisement Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Hi algrove, Take a look here APO Summicron 50/2 ASPH: Central veiling flare / fogging. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
TomB_tx Posted February 10, 2014 Share #742 Posted February 10, 2014 One thing I've noticed over 40 years of sending cameras and lenses for service: you are more likely to get an item serviced correctly by sending just one item at a time, and ideally for only one issue. Otherwise things get overlooked. While I haven't used Leica for service in many years (I've had better results from DAG and others), I noticed the same thing back then. I once sent my SL to Leitz with several issues, they recommended a complete service, and it came back with more issues than it had before. I haven't used them since. That's something I like about DAG: if I specify a particular issue, he will be sure to take care of it, and won't insist on a complete service if it isn't needed. dewilde Posted February 10, 2014 Share #743 Posted February 10, 2014 Well good luck to us all then, since I've been told by Leica that the calibration machine for the M240 is ridiculously expensive. So much so, that Leica would prefer people send cameras to them, then for them to have to allot machines to various service centers around the world.... I tried to informally buy one, if anyone is wondering (you know, for extra income).
helged Posted February 10, 2014 Share #744 Posted February 10, 2014 Sorry and disappointing to hear. I can add support to DAG and Will van Manen Kamera-Service (the Netherlands); I have not experienced problems with repair/adjustment from these craftsmen. Shipment to Solms is another issue. Unfortunately.
Jeff S Posted February 10, 2014 Share #745 Posted February 10, 2014 DAG is often better, faster and less expensive than Leica NJ service. But I have no idea if he could address the 50 APO issues…beyond 'normal' adjustments to aperture rings, cleanings, focus, etc. Jeff
B-A-C Posted February 11, 2014 Share #746 Posted February 11, 2014 Another plug for DAG. He is great.
marknorton Posted February 11, 2014 Share #747 Posted February 11, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Lastly, WAY MORE DUST IN THE LENSES NOW!! Maybe all the construction dust from the new building? That would be some dust storm as the Leica Service Department in Solms is at least 8 miles from the new factory in Wetzlar. MarkP Posted February 11, 2014 Share #748 Posted February 11, 2014 My E49 MATE went to Germany for service and is back there again because they stuffed it up - it was sent as a single item! CRAP SERVICE!
algrove Posted February 11, 2014 Share #749 Posted February 11, 2014 Another plug for DAG. He is great. I sure hope so as I have sent him 7 lenses for 6bit coding and some of them for CLA too. This is my first try with him, but you guys convinced me to try him.

I agree - I've been holding several lenses because he has been so busy I didn't want to overload him. (He once took over a year on my M5... I think he lost track of it until I reminded him.) jbl Posted February 12, 2014 Share #753 Posted February 12, 2014 Don Goldberg (DAG Camera Parts) a fantastic Leica repair guy. He overhauled my M3 and did a fantastic job. Very honest, very thorough. -jbl
dewilde Posted February 15, 2014 Share #754 Posted February 15, 2014 Quick update - Lens seems a lot better then before (CVF resistance), and the contrast and colors are up, but not as they were when I first bought the lens. Though, much better then after the first fix. Just another note, I get weird orbs at 5.6 and above.. Like CVF but faint and perfectly circular and usually in the top left and right corner.. Kinda like reflections from one of the elements. Don't really have a suitable photo, and doesn't seem like it would show up in normal shooting conditions. So all in all, I think I'll reserve sending the lens in for a known upgrade or if a recall is made. Since I think it's best not to try my luck.. Honestly I'm not saying the lens is bad, I'm just of the mindset that it should be more contrasty and vibrant (like it was the first time), and shouldn't have any weird flare issues. Jeff S Posted February 15, 2014 Share #755 Posted February 15, 2014 Maybe too much publicity for DAG recently…I called him after it was taking unusually long to adjust a lens, and he said he's so overwhelmed that "it's just too much for one guy." He seemed uncharacteristically scattered. Hope we don't drive him out of business. Jeff
platypus Posted February 15, 2014 Share #756 Posted February 15, 2014 Sadly this is an all too frequent story with a certain type of uniquely talented small business person, usually men. From personal experience; my husband and business partner (now ex) would never say no to our customers, he insisted on accepting every job that came in to our shop, thus ultimately working himself into a state of complete exhaustion resulting in some sort of quite severe nervous breakdown, from which he has never fully recovered. B-A-C Posted February 16, 2014 Share #757 Posted February 16, 2014 We need more people like DAG, anyone skilled enough? It's sad that I trust him much more than Leica NJ. That is based on personal experience. If they did 100% excellent job I wouldn't need to send DAG gear.

I took my M and the 50 out to a golf course this weekend and it was pretty sunny. The CVF is gone, no loss of central contrast in any of the 62 images I took. Also, I do not notice any loss of pop. Greens still pop and if anything, contrast is a good bit better than before. The lens to me seems to have the same qualities as before, but without the loss of central contrast in certain lighting conditions. Weirdly, I can still see two silver rings of reflected light when looking through the front of the lens. I do not see any new lens edge blacking at all. This would not be acceptable in any of the telescopes I own. Not sure what Leica did, unless it was to replace an element with correct AR coatings. Wish my copy were just slightly more vibrant and contrasty like my very first one. Although again, little to no CVF is welcome. Just wish they would have got it all right. Glad you're happy with yours, I think in a few more months they should have the process down.. We hope
