dewilde Posted December 14, 2013 Share #621 Posted December 14, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Actually spent the better part of an hour looking from 75APO shots of mine. And yes, it also has this issue more then other lenses, BUT finds a good way of hiding it, as in, it's not an orb of fog for mine.. More of a thick softly diffused column or triangular streak that starts from one side of the frame and runs half way across. So in all fairness it's quite subtle and pleasing (except for when it's not).

In fact, this is how my 50APO acts, but my 75APO is really just a bit of column fog in provoked situations. REally not bad like this at all. Does that mean that we have to take into consideration sample variation for EVERY lens? If so, Leica needs to switch to robot assembly.
lct Posted December 15, 2013 Share #626 Posted December 15, 2013 ...Does that mean that we have to take into consideration sample variation for EVERY lens?... I don't think so. Your lens and any other one can flare in some circumstances like putting a strong light source just at the outside of the frame. Try this with a bright window or a PC monitor in a dark room, it works. AFAIK the specific problem of the 50/2 apo is CVF at f/16 nothing else. As clear as i can see it looks rather immune from flare at other apertures, especially at f/2 where it is superb. Will keep this quality when CVF is fixed hopefully. CVF is an annoying issue, but the 50APO is not flare resistant by any means.. It's probably the worst lens I've used for flare resistance.

Can someone who has received the lens back from Leica test for CVS at other apertures? I'm still undecided about purchasing the lens. Thank you. It's probably the worst lens I've used for flare resistance. Sounds like your lens needs to be sent in then as aside from CVF, i've seen excellent results flare wise on this very forum, especially at f/2. Now all lenses do flare more or less as you know. Here's a sample shot close to an halogen lamp with a Summilux 50/1.4 asph at f/16: http://tllg.net/WlXy.

algrove Posted December 15, 2013 Share #637 Posted December 15, 2013 I have had trouble inducing flare with mine although I seldom would use f16 and try not to take CVF inducing images with any lens I own. I just recall that when getting into bright situations where f2-2.8 is wanted and the sun is just off to the side of the frame, I use a 3 stop (0.9) ND filter on my APO50. Any ideas if this method helps reduce CVF? I do not know.
