Leica M8 LCD stopped working

My M8's LCD screen just stopped working, i.e. nothing happens when pushing "play" or "menu". However, the camera still works and the LCD is still able to display messages such as "warning, no SD card inserted" or "bottom cover is open". Anyone seen this before? Any thoughts on what I should do next? Thanks!

From you description I would assume that the display still works. If it can display messages, it works. Hence, the problem appears to lie with some other part or parts of the camera, such as the function keys.

I agree, if the LCD can display anything, it is working. It may be the flexprints from the buttons to the DSP board have worked loose leaving the display connected and working but, as Pop says, the buttons not working. That said, there are two such flexprints, one for the left buttons, the second for the rmenu button and thumb-wheel and it would be surprising both are not working.

One other thing to check. Does the LED flash when writing to the card after taking a picture? If not, that's a further indicator the flexprint is loose because the same connector connects the buttons and the DSP board. If the LED is working, that suggests the connector is OK and there's something amiss on the DSP board.

When you do send it in to Leica, make sure they understand the display is working sometimes. Otherwise, they may jump to the same conclusion which Jaap did - that the LCD is faulty and the camera is beyond repair.

Thank you guys! The red-light does flash after each photo is taken for a few times as normally would.

Another related but dumb question, what's the best way to ship the camera? i.e. best way to wrap the camera and protect it during shipping?

OK, if the red LED flashes, are you quite certain the menu button (which is connected to the DSP board using the same flexprint) doesn't work?

If it doesn't, that suggests an electronic problem on the DSP board.

As for shipping, I use the protective inner box to hold the camera (remove everything, including the strap before shipping) and then ship by DHL to Solms. I do not bother with insurance but you may want to.

If I were you, I would report the problem to Leica as "Menu and Set buttons do not work", not "LCD does not work"

Sorry, but I hardly think the M9 "deal" represents a bargain now even if it ever did. The M9 is somewhat old iron and to pay money to upgrade an M8 doesn't make sense. Besides, the OP's display is working. It will be interesting to see what the repair cost is.

  • 3 weeks later...

So I just heard back from Leica, they will need to fix the circuit board, and clean out some stuff, all-in it will cost $500 to fix... Any thoughts? I'm guessing at this point the camera is worth $1500 after fixing it?

Send it to Leica. It could well be that they offer you a M9 or ME at an interesting price.

In the 13th July AP a reader reader , David Watts, wrote in to say that this had happened to him after only 1900 shutter actuations . The factory at Solms said that they couldn't repair it and that as it was five months out of the guarantee period they could in fact do nothing at all.

The Leica spokesperson Clara Kroher just said "sorry for the inconvenience."

When a nearly new Leica fails it is more than "inconvenience" It is over £3000 down the drain.

When the Leitz family were running the firm the cameras were supported more or less for ever, but now the international money men have taken over it is so different.

I wonder why I had to pay for out of warranty repairs (and not too little either) back in the days the firm was owned by the Leitz family then...:confused:Leica is repairing the camera of the OP at a quite reasonable 500$, so where did this fling come from?

No need to be confused. The crucial point I think was "the factory at Solms said that they couldn't repair it and that as it was five months out of the guarantee period they could in fact do nothing at all. "

A camera failing with 1900 shutter actuations is like a car breaking down at 1900 km!

This I have seen never in my life' date=' even if the car was 7 or 8 years old!
