X Vario lens hood - dealers have them in stock

At least two UK dealers now have the X Vario lens hood in stock. I have just ordered one from my regular Leica Premier Dealer ... who is 1p cheaper ;) than the other dealer whose inventory shows as being 'in stock'.

I already have the grip - and a secondhand Olympus EVF - now need the finger loop (Large) to compete the required accessory kit. Finger loops are the same as used on the M but are not in stock anywhere.

I was hoping to find an aftermarket hood but it's an awkward size/shape and fitting to match.

Good quality branded stick-on screen protectors are also available now via Ebay.

Best wishes

Dose the lens hood fit? They say it will not fit... 43mm Leica filter don't fit as wel.....

Would appreciate details of "they say" who are "they" ?

Leica do not currently make a 43mm filter - nice one Leica! Perhaps they feel the XV does not need one?

I don't have access to a 43mm of any make right now so can't try, but I am surprised by the OP's last point. More info is needed.

I have screwed two different makes of 43mm filter into my X Vario. I do not know yet exactly how the lens hood attaches to the XV - my XV hood should arrive today - it might not be a screw-in fit. It's unlikely that Leica actually manufacture 'Leica' branded filters - they are probably sub-contracted; it should be relatively easy for Leica to offer 'Leica' branded 43mm filters as Hoya, B&W et al all make them. Leica have not offered a filter adaptor for the X1 and X2 even though users need one eg if they want to use a polariser or close-up lenses. Accessory filters and filter accessories appear to be a low Leica Camera AG priority for the X series cameras.

Yes, for 43mm filters in the UK I have found e b+w uv Mrc at Robert white

Also the Zeiss T* at amazon

Hoya is great but does not make the HD or pro1 at this size and I would pass on their basic model for Zeiss or b+w (Mrc only)

The X Vario hood has not arrived yet due to Royal Mail Peterborough postal workers' industrial action ... they all walked out of the Werrington sorting office in support of a colleague who has been disciplined.

As soon as the package arrives I'll find out if it's 'screw in' or some other type of fitting.

I ended up with the Zeiss one. It works great:

Beware of using a normally sized filter! Vignetting occurs towards the wide end of the zoom when combined with the lens hood. Unfortunately, Klaus-Michael’s solution is only good if you don’t want to use the lens hood, as the slimline filter has no front thread. I decided that the lens hood was more useful and put the 43mm filter back on my Zeiss Biogon 35/2.

My hood finally arrived this morning; it's well made, has a good quality matt black interior, a substantial cap and a draw-string pouch. If the hood is kept on the camera the original 'clip-in' lens cap for the camera is redundant - so the pouch is a useful storage bag for it to avoid it getting lost. The large push-on cap is a friction fit and it's good and tight and will not fall off - the cap interior is fabric lined where it slides onto the hood.

With the hood screwed into the camera lens, and with the hood cap on, the camera plus hood plus handgrip is a snug fit into a small size Leica M 8/9 neopren case - which is much cheaper than the X Vario ever-ready case or a leather protector case.

I'll seldom be using a filter unless I need a polariser so the hood will be a semi-permanent fixture - apart from when using adapted Elpro lenses for close-up photography.

Does the half case allow access to battery compartment without removing the case? do you have photo of case from back view of X Vario?

Thanks

Dan

Dan, I do not have a half case (protector case) - but the case requires removal to access the battery. I use a small M 'Neopren Case' as it fits my X Vario with handgrip and lens hood ... and its cheaper. There aren't any cases which allow battery access without removing them.
