plewislambert Posted July 2, 2013 Share #1 Posted July 2, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) When I put a fully recharged battery (German or Chinese) back in my M9 the information shows it as fully charged or almost. One of my Chinese batteries now will not charge beyond 45% however long I leave it charging, whether on a Leitz charger or a Chinese one. Is this battery nearly dead? Should I bin it? The camera works with it installed but presumably it's not good for more than 100 exposures. Thanks for your advice. Philip:)
Advertisement Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Hi plewislambert, Take a look here strange battery behaviour M 9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
250swb Posted July 2, 2013 Share #2 Posted July 2, 2013 The m9 does not like Chinese batteries, they do not have the circuitry inside to communicate the level of charge with the camera. Just use it if is your only spare battery, when the camera warns you that the level is low just keep press 'Set' and eventually the camera will accept that it isn't. plewislambert Posted July 3, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted July 3, 2013 I'll see if that makes a difference. Thanks Philip

Steve +1 I also discovered this and have now recovered 4 batteries previously deemed useless. Sometimes it is necessary to discharge the battery beyond its "low battery" warning by leaving the camera on with some display on the screen, until it dies. Then charge overnight. When the battery is put back into the camera it may still report battery low, but pressing the "Set" button followed by the "Info" button will hopefully reveal a charged battery. Works for me! Shade Posted July 4, 2013 Share #5 Posted July 4, 2013 Not trying to be a smartass or any offensive behaviours but if I have spent quite a lot on a camera I wouldnt mind shelling a few extra for original batteries and avoid third party batteries. They are not well connected to the camera and may cause damages in the long run. Im not even sure if they are running a stable electrical current during its operation and that also may cause damages. But if you somehow insists on using a third party battery, I'd suggest you do what others have told you and buy another third party battery incase your previous one flunks. Steve Hullo Steve, Have you not noticed that ALL Leica batteries and chargers are made in China ! Tryusing DSTE ones. Many years with them and NO problems. 250swb Posted July 26, 2013 Share #8 Posted July 26, 2013 Hullo Steve,Have you not noticed that ALL Leica batteries and chargers are made in China ! Tryusing DSTE ones. Many years with them and NO problems. I did of course mean the Chinese third party batteries, I trust most people will have understood given the context of the discussion I would be careful about recommending a particular brand of third party battery for an M9. I notice you mostly use the M8 forum, so I'm assuming you use and M8. And the M8 does indeed show the correct level of charge with any third party battery, it is the different behaviour of the M9 we are talking about in this case. Since September 2009 nobody has ever found even one brand that works consistently and correctly in the M9, although they all can be made to power the camera one way or another. You should bear in mind that on the introduction of the M9 there were no OEM batteries available from Leica. I had to wait seven months for my order of a spare battery to be delivered. This was everywhere in the world, what was in stock sold out immediately with no fresh supplies. So people had to resort to third party batteries if they hadn't already got some from using an M8. And they found they could be made to work reliably if not correctly. The two I got held their charge much longer than the OEM battery for instance. So using them wasn't a case of being cheap and saving the pennies, but the lesson learned was that camera's didn't blow up by using them, and if any had I'm sure we would have heard about it by now. lucerne Posted July 26, 2013 Share #10 Posted July 26, 2013 How to get them? I tried to order from DSTE via aliexpress.com, but they wont deliver to Germany :-( Due to contracts with Leica Sent from my iPhone using Forum Runner I also tried to source this DSTE brand for delivery to the uk but no one would ship. However I am successfully using a variety of non_leica batteries . My technique is to drain the battery in the camera to below the battery low warning. Then charge, and on fitting the battery back into the leica body, ignore warnings and press SET a few times. I haven't had to bin any battery yet! k-hawinkler Posted July 27, 2013 Share #12 Posted July 27, 2013 I have one of the phony M9 batteries and is impossible to drain it in-camera. You may want to look up Washington's post on this forum with regards to that issue. He demonstrated how to drain a battery via a light bulb. Very cool. lucerne Posted July 27, 2013 Share #13 Posted July 27, 2013 I have one of the phony M9 batteries and is impossible to drain it in-camera. Possibly correct. So; In the menu, I set the camera to "not switch off" . Then I display an image from my card. Eventually the battery will have insufficient power to support even the display. At that point, I find that it can be charged. Don't give up hope.
