Protection for LCD screen

One of the 1st things I did when I got my M8 was to put a Screen Patronus protective cover on it. It took about 2 days before it fell off. I put another on and that lasted 1 day. I wasn't do anything unusual with it, it was exposed to any high humidity, etc, and I was sure to have the LCD screen totally clean before I put it on (and followed their instructions to the letter).

Has anyone else had problems like this? Any other screen protectors to recommend? I really like the Patronus, when it stays on the camera.

I'm on my second one. The first stayed on very well until the corner snagged on something in my bag. I guess that was about a month after I put it on. If it hadn't snagged though it would still be sticking on just fine. I think part of the key is making sure your LCD screen is _really_ clean before you adhere the protector and making sure you're dead-on with your alignment when smoothing it over the screen.

Yes I used the first pack of 3 protectors within one week of trying them. The first one stayed on for maybe 4 days before one edge started to curle up. The second lasted about 1 day and the third about 2 days. When applying the third one I made sure the LCD screen was totally clean and applied correctly. I have another pack of three that is sitting in the bag and that is more then likely where it will stay.

It's a great idea but I just can't get them to work. I walk with the camera a lot and with it resting against my clothes on my side it seem to get caught on the material and starts the edge peeling.

I've come to the conclusion that they just don't work unless you don't use the camera and if you don't use the camera there is no need for the protector.

Initially I had exactly the same problem with ScreenPatronus. I think the problem is caused by the chamfer on the edge of the M8 screen. It leaves the edge of the protector standing slightly proud and it's liable to catch on clothing/fingers etc. especially the corner and edge near the thumbwheel. After I told ScreenPatronus about this they sent replacement screens which had width and height cut to be 0.5mm less. One of those has now stayed on the M8 for 3 months without any problems at all.

Only slight difficulty I did have was the initial alighnment of the smaller screen to give equal 0.25mm borders on all four sides, other than that the screen has proved to be excellent.

ETA: I've used their protectors on the RD-1, Canon 5D and 1DsMkII without issue, so I suspect it's unique to the M8 design, a problem that's easily overcome with the slightly smaller protector.

I second what Mat said...cleanliness and alignment are very important here. I've had the screen protector on for about a week. I did snag a corner once and it now doesn't sit completely flat...I don't think it'll be too long before I'm on my second! Having said that, I think these protectors are the best I've used. They're tough and don't interfere with the display and, if anything, enhance it.

Well why are they still selling the older ones that cover the screen completely? This is just BS, IE for them to still sell the older ones that cover the whole screen. I bought mine about 3-4 weeks ago. I would think they would be smart enough to stop sending out the ones that don't work.

I am using the cheapest screen protectors for Palm devices I could find. They came in a 3pack, costed a little less than us$ 3. I cut the first to fit on the LCD, they stick just by statics.

After three months with the same protector I used the other two one on my old Tungsten T2 and the other on my daughter's Nokia 5300 screen. Neither fell so far.

They are not perfect, don't have a nice name on them and aren't expensive... but they work perfectly. Yes, I know I am cheap :)

best,

When I wrote to them 3 months ago they did say mine was the first M8 complaint. However after I explained the cause of the problem they promptly sent recut replacements. I'll email them links to postings where people have had similar problems. If they don't know about this then they'll take no action. I'd hate to see what I think is a good product get a bad rap because they've received insufficient feedback.

I ordered a large patronus sheet when I first got the M8 (before patronus had specific sizes) and after cutting 3 screens in 2 weeks decided patronus was not a good long-term solution.

I use this product called Clear Touch Crystal, sold by boxwave, on many of my devices. I started using it on my Palm devices a long time back, and it holds up well under a stylus.

I've had one sheet on my M8 for 2 months and there are _no_ signs of it peeling at all and it's very very clear and glare-free. It's a great product. I bought a large sheet for one of the tablet PCs. If anyone is interested, I'm willing to upload a .pdf of my screen stencil for cutout use.

I agree. I was thinking I would email them as well, but if you forward this link to them, I think that will take care of that. I like there product and I especially like the idea of having a protector on my LCD.

Yes please do that.

Thanks.

Do you use the "anti-glare version or the "crystal" version? Also, I just emailed them to see if they can make an M8 size protector.

I use the Crystal Version. It's more of a matte finish, which I like immensely. Really the only thing I do with the LCD is check framing and the histogram, and very occasionally, focus. I do not look at colors per se.

If you do call to ask them to make an M8 sized protector, be sure to tell them to use the inner dimensions of the screen, i.e. on the inside of the bevel.

Chances are they have one that's darn close already.

I am using a Dura-Sec High Tec protector and although it degrades the appearance of the LCD a bit, it is sticking on well and the suface is self healing. It was spot on the correct size when delivered. As I use my left eye on the VF, I was worried about always having to wipe nose marks off the unprotected LCD.

Good point. I emailed them and sent them the internal dimensions so hopefully they can do this (or have something that fits already).

Thanks Wilson. How much degradation of appearance is there? The Patronus seemed to have essentially none to my eye, but I never tried to do a careful before/after comparison. Have you seen other screen protectors to compare? I noticed that they have a High Tech and a ClearTec version. The former is rated for longer use but wonder if the ClearTec is "clearer." Do you have experience with this? Thanks again for the advice.
