Thanks. Only just saw your post in this thread but we have of course been discussing this elsewhere.

ps: I hope you're making a speedy recovery.

Thanks, Mark. I am getting better day by day and hope to get out shooting sometime early next month. Trouble is I have low weight limits imposed by the Doc so glad I have an M system and M lenses.

You could always just take one body and one lens .

Do you know how the 15-R compares with the 16-WATE?

I don't know how they compare ... the Super-Elmarit-R 15 mm Asph sure is a wonderful lens—but then, so is the Tri-Elmar-M 16-18-21 mm Asph. It's not only sharp, it also takes the harshest back light graciously, with only minor ghosts and virtually no loss of contrast.

My recollection, which may be wrong, is that someone here accidentally found a 6-bit code for a currently not avaliable Leica ultra-wide.

That's correct. Code 51 in conjunction with the 35/135 framelines was recognised as a "14/3.8" lens in older M9 firmware versions. I don't know if the current firmware v1.196 as well as the M (Typ 240) still recognise this code. I asked two Leica representatives about the allegedly upcoming 14 mm lens, and both said no, it's not going to come anytime soon. Sometimes, lenses are planned, and prototypes built, and then get cancelled still, for all kinds of reasons (technical, economical, whatever).

Yeah, and you could ditch that heavy R 15/2.8 and take the much lighter (and better and more versatile) WATE with your M.:D

Yes, I could do that. The next suggestion you will have is for me to leave that heavy APO50 at home and instead mount my 40/2.0 Summicron C. Or leave behind my APO 90/2 and take the 90/4 macro instead.

To save weigh I was thinking of taking my R 280/2.8 without camera body and just sit there imagining the images I could be taking if I only had a camera body attached.

Yes, take the 90/4 macro and since everyone's 50 APO is back in the shop, skip the 50 and just bring the 28 Summicron. WATE/28/90. Hey, that is my "on the run" travel kit. :)

:D

Mine's being used as a door-stop.

Lord knows why I ever thought I would carry this around with me .....

.... possibly on safari with a line of native bearers ...... it alone would use up virtually all my hand luggage weight entitlement on most flights ....

Talking about the 28/2. I was a bit surprised at Tim Ashley's comment that it was about at its last legs with the M240 and it might not sustain a 30MP sensor. I still like the lens a lot.

He must have a bad copy. I read his review and that put me off it for while. Problem is, it has such a nice character and I'm not sure what he is talking about it being boring. How can a lens be boring? I would never say a lens is boring.

It is a spectacular lens for what I do, walking around during the day shooting pictures. Most of the time I'm shooting f8 where this lens is very sharp. It handles flare well, is sharp, and has high contrast, but not so high that it works against you on bright days. Distortion is very low as well. I'm not sure what more you could ask for in a street/travel lens.

When I travel, I probably shoot 80% of my pictures with it. When I decide what I'm going to walk out with for the day, I always seem to grab the 28cron and leave the 35 lux behind. I know, the 35Lux FLE is a fantastic lens (except the bokeh sucks), and it is a great, technically perfect lens... but it is just too boring for me.

I agree with the two of you about the 2.0/28 Summicron ASPH being a fantastic lens.

I too take it in preference to the 1.4/35 FLE.

You may remember we have previously discussed the 2.0/28 'Boricron' inspired by Tim Astley's boring comments:
