M7 lower dot & battery problem

Wondering how many have this problem- I seem to have the lower dot flashing almost all the time on both my M7's. I've been told that it is from having the ISO dial bumping against me while carrying the camera, but that seems to be wrong, as I can hand carry the camera and have the dot come on. I've been told that my nose is the culprit, bumping the ISO wheel when I shoot a vertical, but my schnozz isn't that big.

I shoot in DX, and most often in Auto, and use the exposure compensation on some shots, but certainly not all. I can tap on the ISO dial and have the dot go away, but it comes back on again a shot or two later.

I also seem to burn through batteries- this seems to have settled down, but I still get only 30 rolls or so out of a set of the lithium cells.

Anyone have any ideas?

Robert,

I cant comment on battery life, I dont pay attention...:D

However I am also having the lower dot flashing quite a bit. I also noticed yesterday that the DX sysem was not reading the film canister reliably. I was taking some pictures of a stage performance, moved position and suddenly the new meter reading was totally different. A little later I noticed when I turned the camera on again that it was showing ISO 25 in the finder, when the film was ISO400

I have switched to manually setting ISO, so the dot flashes now when it 'misreads' the film canister. I am doing my best to ignore the damn thing....

Mmmm...I had the film speed glitch briefly last year, shooting in DX and auto, on M7 2853XXX. Since then, I've religiously wiped the film canister and the DX contacts each time I load film (only thing I could think to do!)...it may be sheer coincidence, but it's never happened since.

cheers:

Sam

Dear all

This post appears to be in a similar vein as the one on the M7 and its associated DX coding problems seen earlier in this forum (cannot remember when exactly).

I too have a one year old M7 (ser # 294xxxx) and it also, with depressing regularity, defaults to either 25asa or 100asa irrespective of the actual asa of the film or whether I have set the film speed manually or on DX coding - it just does it. I shoot on Auto mode only. I too find that before putting a new film in, rubbing the film canister as well as running my finger along the DX “pins” firmly so that they are pushed back in the camera body such that they spring back, and wiping the contact points between the back of the camera body and the flap, with a lens cloth works – but only for the first third to half of the roll. After that it starts misbehaving again. I find that repeated pressure to the back of the camera may make it read the correct asa, but the whole thing is very much a hit & miss process. I have actually lost images because of overexposure. Also doing all the above is very well when in the comfort of your favourite armchair, but when in the middle of the street, it tends to be irritating. Ultimately, it will have to go back.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to Leica and just ordered my M7 Starter kit with 50mm F2.

As I found this thread I got a little worried.. actually really worried. I mean its not like I am buying a pencil or something, Leica cameras are so expensive, can't we expect to get a non faulty product in return?

I sure hope my M7 doesn't have any of these issues, I will look out for it and report back here later when I have my camera.

Btw. does anyone know if the Leica warranties are same internationally? I'm in Hong Kong and I ordered original HK goods, no grey import.

Hi!

Correct me if I’m wrong but the lower red dot is for when the battries are low on power or are about to or close to die ? page 65 I thinks in the manual.

Steve

If that is right this would explain these issues, right? Might low battery power cause the automatic ISO recognition to use a false setting?

Well I still didn't get my M7, the shop said I might get it today. Will report back after I got it.

Steve

not sure which manual you are looking at, the one I have downloaded from the Leica website says;

page 72 - 'if the decimal display LEDs or the light balance flash when exposure metering is activated, then the batteries should be replaced'

then on page 81 is a table indicating when the lower dot specifically will flash, which is when the film speed is different to the DX code on te film canister, or when exposure compensation is set.

So no, its not just about low battery status.

regards,

Guy

My M7 does this as well. I found that by rotating both film speed dials back and forth a few times it goes away. So I think that poor contacts on the dials are as much of a problem as on the canister dx contacts.

Maybe that's why pressing your nose on the dials sometimes causes it. I'm left eyed so I can't avoid that, but right eyed people wouldn't have the problem.
