hsujy Posted July 20, 2013 Share #201 Posted July 20, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) No (1) I got my silver Leica M in the end of May. In these 2 months the camera stopped working with red light continue flushing for several occasions. The fault always happened on important moment when I pressed the shutter repeatedly. Each time I had to remove and reinsert the battery to let the camera return working. The card I use is a Sandisk Extreme pro 32GB card.

thighslapper Posted July 21, 2013 Share #202 Posted July 21, 2013 The thing I find surprising is the "some people" part. This is a standardized electronic device. Everybody should have these problems - or nobody. We should dig deeper for the cause. ..... yes but it's controlled by software ..... and if you bang enough keys in random combinations on your keyboard and plug/unplug bits simultaneously you will crash your computer. Same with a digital camera .... press enough buttons in the 'wrong' order and you stand a fair chance of crashing the program and locking it up. Random fiddling when unfamiliar with the controls and trying everything in a deranged frenzy of excitement when you first get it is a potent way of knackering the poor thing. As reported lock-ups for most people seem to be very infrequent it is hard to pin down a pattern ..... although most people mention 'missing a shot' because of it ... which suggests to me thay were going something rapidly and in a hurry ..... which is also why you can rarely recall exactly what you did that 'caused' it. My few instances occurred under both these circumstances .... when new ..... (and I still suspect a new battery plays a part in this) and when I was frantically trying to photograph some uncooperative ducks.... Anyway, the 'firmware' doesn't appear to be 'firm' yet and no doubt future iterations .... which usually involve more efficient and robust coding will help..... CheshireCat Posted July 21, 2013 Share #204 Posted July 21, 2013 As reported lock-ups for most people seem to be very infrequent it is hard to pin down a pattern ..... although most people mention 'missing a shot' because of it ... which suggests to me thay were going something rapidly and in a hurry Which also suggests heat may play a role in this. Try shooting every few seconds in Live View after your camera has been exposed to the sun for one hour, 100F/38C air temperature. The camera has a heat sensor to avoid hardware damage. If engineers set too conservative heat limits (or the hardware has not been properly engineered) then you get the lockups. I am inclined to think that the hardware has not been properly engineered for Live View. Note however that some lockups may be caused by other software bugs. Some people just set and use the camera differently than most others, and they will hit hw and sw bugs more or less frequently.
alexander Posted July 21, 2013 Share #205 Posted July 21, 2013 This is a survey question for anyone who actually owns the M Typ 240. It is a simple question. Please Answer YES or NO only. There is another thread for discussion. It is the current thread about a blogger that got a camera he judged as unreliable. I'm just curious about a broder sample than just one camera copy. Please update the tally as you post. Do you rate your M Typ 240 as Reliable? Simple as that. Feel free to fairly apply your own definition of reliable when you answer either Yes or No. Thank you. Yes (1) No (0) yes

Tibicen Posted July 21, 2013 Share #207 Posted July 21, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) My M is in heavy use for three months now. So far zero issues, and I had it out in low temperature, snow and hard rain! Returned it for the strap lugs and had it back in no time. I'm so tired about people sharing their "expertise" who actually never used this camera that I rarely visit here (the LUF) these days. I, for one, am very happy with my tool, it gave me so far unique opportunities, especially a new meaning to low-light photography. So my vote is: Yes, it's reliable, absolutely! (don't know the number, reading through the whole thread too tiresome) Best regards, Claus
