Heya guys..

I have two m3's.

One in the million series.. and a new one in the 700,000 series..

I find it allot easier to focus with my million series and extremely hard to focus with my 700,000 series..

Is this because its an older series and the later ones were just easier or is there something wrong with my new one?

Yes!

The rangefinder patch is not as easy to see.

If bright light its not a problem.. but when im in low light situations.. the M3 (million Series) is much easier to focus with then the new (700k series) Does this make sense?

it could be silvering on prism within viefinder mechanism but i would try firstly with cleaning. Starting from the left window, through the viefinder itself. It requires dismanteling of camera, possibly viefinder thus I would leave this job for an experienced camersa repair. Doing it I would go for the complete CLA including shutter.

Similar problems with my M3s, both in the 750000 serial # range. They had been sitting unused for many years because of viewfinder dimness issue.

It seems the viewfinder ages and degrades over the years. Something to do with the glue and other parts used at the time. Others on this board can probably give a more detailed account of what exactly happens.

About a year ago I sent both cameras to Youxin Ye near Boston. He was able to clean one viewfinder and it's back to new factory condition (guessing on that, I was only 5 when it came out of the factory).

On the other M3, it was too far gone to simply clean so he replaced old viewfinder with an M2 viewfinder. Not the cheapest solution, but it's now my favorite Leica to use because of the ease of focus. As a bonus, it now has 35mm frame lines too. Seriously, it's easier to focus than my M6 and M9. Oh, if it only had a TTL meter!

Anyway, hope this helps. If you're lucky, a simple cleaning can get you back up to speed.

Should be possible to resilver the necessary parts, the rf in my III was sorted out by Malcolm Taylor, it was very low contrast and is now excellent. My M3 is not so clear as my M6, but ok as yet.

Some years ago I bought an M3 which was impossible to focus because the R/F second image was too dim. Don Goldberg of DAG cleaned it and it was fine. With screw mount Leicas like Gerry's, what's needed is a new half silvered R/F mirror (beam splitter).
