alandash Posted June 17, 2013 Share #1 Posted June 17, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I noticed that leather case ads for the earlier M models mention that they fit the M1, M2, M3, but the M4 is not mentioned. Did the bodies of the M4, M6, MP, M7 have a slightly larger size, precluding them from fitting into the original cases?

Did the bodies of the M4, M6, MP, M7 have a slightly larger size, precluding them from fitting into the original cases? ...alandash, dimensions (W x H x D) for the Leica M4, M6, M6TTL, M7 and MP are as follows: M4: 138mm x 77mm x 36mm M6: 138mm x 77mm x 36mm M6TTL: 138mm x 79.5mm x 36mm M7: 138mm x 79.5mm x 38mm MP: 138mm x 77mm x 38mm In my experience with film Ms, the discontinued Leica Ever Ready Case #14870 or its current model (#14875) will do just fine for any of these camera bodies. Hope this helps.

Hope this helps. ***CORRECTION*** I just discovered an error in the Leica M dimensions listed above. The depth of the Leica M6 and M6TTL camera bodies is 38mm, not 36mm as previously stated. Thus: M4: 138mm x 77mm x 36mm M6: 138mm x 77mm x 38mm M6TTL: 138mm x 79.5mm x 38mm M7: 138mm x 79.5mm x 38mm MP: 138mm x 77mm x 38mm Source: Leitz/Leica literature. My position re: the ever ready cases remains the same. Apologies for any confusion.
giordano Posted June 17, 2013 Share #4 Posted June 17, 2013 I noticed that leather case ads for the earlier M models mention that they fit the M1, M2, M3, but the M4 is not mentioned. Did the bodies of the M4, M6, MP, M7 have a slightly larger size, precluding them from fitting into the original cases? M6 and later (with TTL exposure meter) are fractionally thicker, not because of the body but beccause the ISO dial on the back is thicker than the film speed reminder on the M4 and earlier. That's the 38 vs 36mm to which Aesop refers. The M6TTL and M7 are a bit taller, but as the cases have room for the Leicameter that shouldn't be a problem. Could it be that the ads for the old cases don't mention the M4 because it wasn't around at the time? My M6 classic certainly fitted in a M3-vintage case. The only other thing I can think of is that when you're rewinding a film, the angled rewind crank on the M4 after might come too close to the top of the leather. alandash Posted June 23, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted June 23, 2013 Thanks to all for the measurements. However, what are the dimensions for the M3 & M2, since the cases were designed for that size? I was able to put my M4 behind a friend's M3, and noticed that the M4 body was very slightly taller than the M3, and the edge of the slanted rewind crank added a slight more corner bulk. Leather cases seem to have more generous dimension tolerances than any solid camera, so it seems that minor differences between M models may still be easily accommodated by the same case. Cases with a higher "roof" to allow for a Leicameter make the height less of a possible problem.

colmac Posted November 29, 2013 Share #10 Posted November 29, 2013 Would anybody know for certain if an M2 without self-timer will fit into the Leica eveready case 14505 originally made for the M6 classic? If not, what are the issues? Col

earleygallery Posted December 30, 2013 Share #13 Posted December 30, 2013 All M bodies are the same size, apart from the M6TTL & M7 which have fractionally taller top plates. The thickness as mentioned is due to the slight protrusion of the ISO dial. Some early M's had the larger diameter tripod thread, but I don't see why any M can't fit any case, although for practical reasons if you have the M6 or later you want a case that allows you to reach the ISO dial.
