Winter time or five days before Christmas

I was covering one of the local rallies the other night using the XVario, which I hadn't used in that type of situation. I had set up to use my b&w profile with iso at 1600, but soon started using the flash. Normally I prefer to dial down the flash output a bit, usually -2/3, but in the hustle and bustle, it was on default.

While processing the b&w jpeg images I noticed in this image that I could read the info on the microphone cable- though I doubt it will be readable in this jpeg compressed version. I was surprised, and again amazed by the resolving power of this lens. Luckily, I always shoot raw and jpeg, so had this one in reserve...just in case.

I've posted the set of b&w images on my Flickr account for anyone interested-

As much as I love the B&W  straight out of the camera,  I think I will be bracketing shots more often under challenging lighting conditions.
This photo was run through Affinity Photo’s HDR merge.

To hood or not to hood with the XV?

I know it is a personal preference, but just curious on thoughts and practices.

prevent or reduce flare? Vignetting? Official Leica brand or aftermarket?

My Leica lens hood and cap are permanent fixtures except when I choose to use a polarizing filter.  Apart from reducing flare it is an ever-present deterrent against stray fingers. Strangely,  it also enhances my hold.

I use a hood to protect the edges of the lens as my 1st LXV was damaged there.  It doesn't seem to make a difference image wise.

Canadian Pacific 7017 and company crew changing at Kipp just west of Lethbridge. 7017 is painted in the original Maroon and Grey of the CP and is one of a number of new units so treated. Taken on a grey miserable day, 23rd December 2019.
