Thanks Gary and looking at my data, I forgot to set ISO at 1600. I was at 400! Was it you who said I'd love traveling with this puppy? Anyway as I was packing I went to pack two cameras and even though my car would hold the gear, it meant bringing an extra camera bag. So I decided the X Vario would have suffice. I pack it in my computer bag- light and lean! :)

Here are three others that caught my eye along the way this afternoon.

Looking good David.

Might have been me that said that, but many have, as there is quite a following of users. The nay-sayers always tell you it's too old, it's too slow, etc, and they are right. But when you open the files, OMG they are nice.

I have the cognac case thing, fully encloses the camera. Handy, but not overly user friendly, the front flap almost gets in the road when you want to shoot. And if you use a filter on the front like I do when travelling, the case won't close, it's that tight a fit. But it protects mostly, so I travel with it.

Thanks Gary,  I know about the nay-sayers but realize it is mostly what feeds our looking to new models and rationalizing getting a newer model.  As for the case issue, and filters, I used to always have a filter on the lens. I've been living dangerously lately and thinking I will go back to filters on the X Vario. I only ever use a half case, and for carrying either of the  X  cameras in a larger bag or shoulder/backpack, I have one of those Optecs brand neoprene cases that is only for while camera is in transit. That way when it's out, I'm ready to shoot.

On my way home I had a stop to take pictures while light was soft and fog was rolling across the Columbia. Hope to post in a day or so. I have to say, I used at least two focal lengths for that shoot and that scores more points for me and the Vario-Elmar. I have never been a zoom person but this one is addicting. I dislike changing lenses more than I dislike zooms I guess :)

On a recent trip I took the X Vario an the D-Lux 109. I mostly used the 109 because it was easier to carry around. Now I wish I had used the Vario more. It is a slow lens, but the higher ISO settings work quite well, and the weight of the camera allows for slower shutter speeds. As David says, the lens is addicting.

David, if your filter was used to protect the front element, mainly, my method is simple but different. My lens always has the hood fitted. When ready to shoot, I remove the end cap which I cup in my left palm, shoot and then replace the cap giving constant protection. It is such a habit that it is done instinctively without thinking about it.

David,

I agree with your method here. In fact when I first picked up the X 113, I did that with the large metal cap that was leashed to the neck strap loops. It bothered me at first, but now I only use it that way. I haven't been using a hood on the X cameras recently other than my hand as a light shield when I feel it is necessary. That practice probably began when I got the X1 :)

But the excellent hood does protect the lens from fingers and provides a useful end stop for the fingers when curled around the lens barrel.

Not to mention a buffer or deflector from when you crash into stuff!   As I said, I am living dangerously, not recommending anyone else do it :)

On my way back home yesterday I drove along Interstate 90 through Vantage. This spot on the Columbia is just west of the Gorge at George, Washington. I always look forward to any opportunity to visit this spot, and the rolling morning fog yesterday morning caused a continually evolving landscape even in the short time I spent there.

My biggest issue with the lens hood is that it creates a shadow when the flash is used. I don’t use the flash often, but do find it helpful indoors when the light gets low or for fill flash outdoors.
