Hi Amy,

These are artefacts resulting from JPEG compression to meet the 500K forum limit. Typical on wide areas of almost the same color. :(

Rather, they are the result of the forum rescaling the picture to comply with the 1280px limit, as I wrote in the FAQ I linked to above.

Yeah it's called Quantization. It's from the number of colors in the image being reduced to decrease the file size. I guess if the pixel dimensions are too large, the forum's software might do this first to get it under the file size limit and then scale it down to the 1280 long edge limit. It should be doing it the other way around though, scale, then compress.

Today I came back from a vacation in the UAE. I mainly used my X-Vario, so chances are high, that I will post more soon :)

I understand that this forum is not the place for NSFW imagery, but I would like to see how the X Vario holds up when shooting art nudes, preferably B&W. A link to a gallery of such images would be much appreciated.

Sorry, can´t help you with that. But I can show you, how the Vario handled in a redlight district lately

It's a camera, it can shoot whatever you point it at.

I guess that's meant to be humorous, rather than helpful? Or do you perhaps believe that any camera, with any type of lens, at any aperture, is fit to take photographs of any subject, simply because "it's a camera"?

Well, it's not really the kind of question a another photographer can answer for you.

If the focal length range of the X-Vario suits the style of B&W nudes you shoot, then it's a fine camera. It's APS-C, so either the extra depth of field you get vs the same framing from a full frame camera will either work for you, or against you, depending on your own personal tastes.

It also has a slow lens, so if you want super shallow depth of field, or if you like to shoot in low light, it's not the best camera for that. If you shoot with strobes, then won't be much of a problem, but if you shoot with hot lights or natural lights, it might be.

The quality of the lens is very good. The files it puts out are very good as well, and very malleable during a B&W conversion.

It's a modern digital APS-C camera with a slow, but sharp zoom lens. The results are going to be similar to that of a Canon Rebel with the kit zoom but in a much smaller, easier to carry around package.

I dislike these things, no real reason and I am certainly bigger than them, but I still dislike them.

It's a Cicada, they make a wonderful chirping noise in summer/autumn.

My wife walked in with this one, and set it down on a vine nearby, so I grabbed the X-Vario, and slipped the Elpro VIb on as well.

This one is really fantastic. I tried to catch some shots of Cicada in Greece last year, but was not nearly as successful as you. One question though: What do you mean by "wonderful chirping noise"? The Cicada in Greece made a noise, that was extremely loud and disturbing. Maybe the green Cicada are built differently :)
