Advertisement Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Hi Guest JMF, Take a look here I like film...(open thread). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
dgc Posted February 10, 2016 Share #10962 Posted February 10, 2016 5222 is Kodak Double-X, motion picture film in 35mm format. It's my favourite b&w film because it looks similar to Tri-X, pushes as well and - importantly - dries quite flat. I'm pretty happy with this frame, though it's a bit mushy and washed out grain-wise which I dislike. In my rather limited experience the tricky thing with stand/semi-stand is that it makes it difficult to reproduce the results. Sometimes results (and some frames on a roll) are good whereas other times (and other frames) are not. It offers the same benefit as Diafine that one can develop films of various ISO (or even a film shot a wildly different EI) at the same time in a tank. But Diafine is better because it follows a strict protocol, 4+4 minutes (or a bit longer, time is pretty irrelevant it seems), which gives reproducable results. The same is the case with pushing - Diafine does that really well with many films (though there are some drawbacks in terms of grain size etc) and while stand/semi stand offers that too (letting highlights and shadows develop fully, as I understand it) it's hit or miss in terms of the results. Stand/semi stand with HC-110 (which is the only developer I've tried it with) is also temperature-dependent. Diafine on the other hand can be used with pretty much identical results in the range of 21-29C (or 70-85F) which is great for someone like me who lives in a temperate environment. On closer inspection I can see some reflection/bubbling/ spotting on the head nearest the camera, but you clearly have a very critical eye especially given the light available. I have being trying to get hold of Diafine, given the many good reviews, for some time now given you can readily shoot with different ISOs on a film. My regular suppliers of film and chemicals don't seem to do it or they are awaiting stock. I am not sure if I also recall reading that it is may be environmentally unfriendly, if it is not already. But then I feel I should stick with D76 and DDX, just so I get to know how these behave.
dgc Posted February 10, 2016 Share #10963 Posted February 10, 2016 Sometimes I stop strangers on the street and randomly ask them to pose for a portrait. It let's me pretend - on a fantasy level - that I am a photographer who knows what he is doing. Here is one from a roll that was lost in my brief case for about 9 months that I finally just got developed... Lower Manhattan, NYC KODAK TRI-X OK Adam, enough is enough with your office view and your photographs can you please take a photograph of your office door and prove it does have a nameplate stating you are the Photographic Editor for Vogue or similar !

dgc Posted February 10, 2016 Share #10966 Posted February 10, 2016 Another Acros 100 shot (same equipment and development as last one). Flickr I assume this is a MF given the 80mm lens ? I would be so tempted to print this at Grade 4 or above or hugely increase the contrast or black/ highlight sliders, knowing full well that I would lose the detail. I like this. philipus Posted February 10, 2016 Share #10968 Posted February 10, 2016 Thank you David. I ordered Diafine from Maco in Germany and they happily delivered to me here in NL so I assume they'd ship to you too. It's funny you mention DDX and D76 because as I am about to order new fixer I've been thinking of trying a new developer, too. How do you find these two? brPhilip On closer inspection I can see some reflection/bubbling/ spotting on the head nearest the camera, but you clearly have a very critical eye especially given the light available. philipus Posted February 10, 2016 Share #10970 Posted February 10, 2016 Thank you David. And yes, sorry I should have given the full info. It was shot with my Hasselblad 203FE. When I scanned it I had the same thought about increasing the contrast which would have brought out the tree's shadow more. I often process one version of the scan with as wide a tonal range as possible and then play around with the image (mainly using Curves and, if colour, Lab) to make alternate versions. brPhilip I assume this is a MF given the 80mm lens ? chrism Posted February 10, 2016 Share #10976 Posted February 10, 2016 Henry, you can use a Flextight for MF and LF up to 4x5 (not larger) but you don't need to go that far. A cheap Epson flatbed will do the job very nicely. I have six 4x5 negatives drying at present, all taken in your honour. I'll scan them when they are dry and see if any are worth posting up here. gsgary Posted February 10, 2016 Share #10979 Posted February 10, 2016 The C330 is great for close-ups. Great colours in the poppy. How did you judge the framing with a TLR at short distances - experience or a tripod with paramender ? I have the paramender 2 but have never used it, but then I have not done much tripod/ close up work with the C330 yet. I don't use a tripod if i can help it they just get in the way i have a paramender but never used it, i just focused then tilted it up with poppy right at the bottom of the frame
gsgary Posted February 10, 2016 Share #10980 Posted February 10, 2016 This is why I could never do street photography. I just could not ask strangers if I could take their photographs, maybe it is my 'Britishness'! I have watched one or two of Eric Kim's videos on youtube who says he can teach you how to get over this fear, but old dogs and new tricks etc. This was my one attempt at Street Photography and by the time that I had the shot in focus they all started smiling for me. Notice how I gave myself the barrier of the door between the subject and myself and, distance to run19585553625_29a6d0d65a_o.jpg. Well you do live in Wales it's full of nutters
