What an opening salvo to celebrate the coming year, backward glancing as a way of looking forward, forever now. You certainly capture something heartfelt here with Steven's eyes reading right into the camera. With your feet squarely anchored on the ground, Phil, you always manage to bring it home. I look forward to more of these portraits and the echo of their narratives. What an admirable, cinematic film in freeze frames that speak.

Phil, I saw that photo in the very early hours of 2023 and thought, wow, what an entry photo for 2023.. !     Chapeau.

And Happy New Year to you, Phil, and all!

What a wonderful, wonderful portrait, really capturing and honoring Steven's spirit and determination. There's a whole lived life in those eyes, but a better future as well.

Congratulations, Phil, and looking forward to more being posted.

Thank you sincerely, Rog, Klaus and Ken. And to all who support this always-stimulating thread.

Another from the 2012 series (oddly, there were a number of people named Steve or Steven):

"Hello, I’m Steven. I’m 52 and I’ve lived in Melbourne for 18 years. I’m a passionate cyclist and I have recently completed a Diploma in Community Development. I’m also a public speaker, putting a human face on living with HIV. I’m an advocate for gay rights and marriage equality, I will stand with anyone to fight for change, to make for a better world. My second greatest achievement is having cycled 900kms across South Africa, my first is having survived HIV, against the odds."

Thanks so much for this, Phil. Again, what living this expresses. Here's hoping that a decade later, he's still healthy and cycling.

Another snapshot of grandchild, but this time an attempt at the "cinematic." And with a rather Spartan little camera, but with a pretty classy, French lens.....Kodak Retinette with Angenieux 50/3.5. I think she looks very French. :)

Quite an accomplishment. I have seen a few of attempts with this camera; none as good as this one. Beautiful scene.

Best,

Wayne

I enjoy the pictures of your grandchildren. You are assembling a nice record of their childhood!

Clearly the young Jean Seberg in a prequel to " Breathless" . Guess Jean Paul is not far away,  just waiting  to enter the frame on his  tricycle.....😄
