Herald Square NYC 1987

Tri-X  M4p

At the time I was on assignment waiting for Mikhail Gorbachev. He was in town to meet with Regan and nobody knew which path his Limo was going to take. They had me camped out at Herald Square for several hours.  It was quite cold. But I was 25 and it was fun. He never came through Herald Square but I think his wife shopped at Macy's (in Herald Square) a few days before so they figured...

Great pic, great memories. Seeing the Olden Camera sign. That neighborhood was filled with camera stores -- Olden, Camera Bard on B'way and 32/33 and on 32 between 6 and 7 was Willoughby Peerless, and a bunch of other stores. All gone now. Thanks for the memory!

In trying to figure out how to use up the Delta 3200 in the freezer, and wanting to do it in Diafine, I exposed a roll at both 1250 and 1600. Clearly the 1250 negatives were the better of the two, but still needed lots of work and still had nasty grain. Next roll will be 640/800.

I wonder where that term "S composition" comes from in landscape painting.

'S' for Severn!

Now I think I understand the concept of a photographer's personal "signature." Or is it just that the River Severn asserts its own signature over the landscape? Thanks for your cool website.

:) The Severn does leave it's mark, Rog.  The tidal section, as in the image I posted, is particularly..........awesome....

Thanks for your comments, appreciated!

my lab ( and film shop )  recommends ASA 1250  in XTOL and to meter for the shadows.... so 640 might be alright

Thanks Kl@us, the camera is the plastic Lomography Sprocket Rocket. Cheap as chips, U.K. price £50 retail. FoV 103 degrees and exposes the 35mm negative two frames in width - a poor man’s Pan-X.

Yes! Olden camera was great (The yellow pages in the back of Modern Photography). I remember walking up those stairs many times; the building was old then; full of character. I remember all of those other camera shops as well. Uptown a bit more was the Nikon House by Rockefeller center. I think I remember seeing a gold plated F2.Glad the pic brought back some nice memories for you.

Fantastic Phil. It would make lots of "established" (and I here mimic my daughter's use of her hands' index and middle fingers to indicate sarcasm) photographers green with envy.

This is truly excellent. Thanks also for answering the question about HC110 at 30C. I was wondering the same thing as Steve earlier.

Nikon F80, Nikkor 50/1.8 AFD, Fuji 4511 iso 3 (although it seems it works better at iso 1.6 in midday sun)

Cool, to cite The Patriot's John Tavner.

That is a really beautiful part of Sweden. When I grew up we had a summer house just around the bend from where this railway goes.

Incidentally my beloved Hasselblad has returned from some well-earned R&R at the Gothenburg mothership and I picked him (whom I've affectionately named Hasse, of course) up yesterday from my favourite photoshop here, Calumet in Rotterdam. Happy days ahead. It was sent with better wrapping than this though lol.
