Congrats! There is something unique in the way the Rolleiflex renders. Entirely different than a Hasselblad (just as sharp, in a different way. Not better or worse...). Somehow more..."atmospheric".

most Rolleis have the very same Zeiss lens as the standard Hasselblad lens: the Planar 2,8/80, both cameras are used on waist level, both cameras are MF, so I'm not so sure about the unique rendering  of either camera-- perhaps  it is more the user that makes the difference.... Vivian Maier versus Ansel Adams  ?

Intriguing, Rog. I have to admit that I didn't see anything but a collage before recognizing your disclaimer. So your "eye" switches to collage-mode when you are on the street ? Or is it the other way round ?

beautiful picture, downstairs. But does the drum scanner eliminate the dust ?

Zeiss made lenses for both Rollei and Hasselblad, but they are not the same lenses.

It is interesting. For years, I figured the apex Rolleiflex lens was the 2.8 Planar, but having recently had a chance to use a 2.8C with Schneider Xenotar, I am not so sure. The Xenotar is different- to my eyes- but in no way can it be considered an inferior lens to the Planar. I recently commented about this on a Rollei list and was informed that Rollei specified the lenses to be used on their cameras; both Zeiss and Schneider had to meet the same specifications. I took that as meaning the Zeiss lenses for Rollei may have been slightly different/unique from lenses sold to other mfg.......Not to say inferior; just different.

Best,

Wayne

I read that the Hasselblad lens has a different design too, it needs a longer working distance due to the mirror and may have incorporated an extra element or two to achieve this. And the mechanical shutter / iris in the TLR need not to be held open for viewing through the lens so it may be slightly different. I would imagine coatings are the same at least.

FYI - the camera I bought is the f3.5 Planar, because that’s what I used to own and I wanted the same. This lens has an excellent reputation.

Thanks for your input. Collage-mode! You are one amusing fellow. Maybe I'm in "collage-mode" 24/7. But, this is so close to a la mode that it makes me hungry for a piece of pie with vanilla ice cream. Seriously, I guess I'm always looking for editing opportunities, the composition that seems to work by what's in the frame, as well as what's out of the frame. Lately, I am becoming more aware of the margins. I really get jazzed when I see awesome "street photography" on the forum because this is a skill that's beyond me.

Thanks Charles.  Yes,  the Fujinon SWD 90mm is  by far my most used lens of the three I have .  There  were four lenses available, the fourth one being the 105mm which is not a very useful aov if you have the 90. The 180mm rarely does the format justice, although I do use it when the situation demands a narrow(er) fov.  My least used lens is the T300, it’s a true telephoto and  produces a very compressed perspective on 6x17.  Generally, the format is best suited to the lenses in the 72mm- 90mm range

I’ve had this camera and lenses for well over 25 years, it goes back to the time when I supplied calendar publishers with landscape images.

if you can find one in good useable condition, buy it.  Make sure you have the original 1-stop centre nd with the 90mm as you won’t find one otherwise.  Also check the detachable viewfinder very carefully for damage, they can sometimes suffer from internal mould due to landscapers like me being out in all weathers!

Thanks Steve - that's exceptionally helpful! Amusingly 90% of those available from ebay are 105s. Before spending what is a decent wedge, as I lack any means of wet printing such an image, I'm going to play with replicating the format on my Intrepid with a mask to aid composition. Then crop and print digitally. If I like the results, a Fuji looks to be the best idea.

Charles, the 3d printed Malefic 617 is a much cheaper alternative

The drum holds the film coated in transparent gunk so no or little dust specks.
