Gravina, Ruins of a Swabian Castle - Leica M6, Summicron 35 asph, Tri-X

I drove by this place in June and shot some expired vision2 500T. Garbage. So I drove here again with my Pentax 67 and some Portra 160 in August, but I found out there was no spool in the camera when I was already there. I ended up shooting some Tri-X with the M6 which was my (fancy) backup camera that day. I guess I'm not lucky with color.

Hello,

Nice shot, what film and developing?

Thank you, the film was Lomo Metropolis, exposed at ISO 100 and developed at a local lab in C41. Compared to my other results with this film it is atypical, “relatively” normal in appearance wrt grain and colour. I wonder if low contrast situations helped this picture and will do more experiments on that. In Sunlight light tones easily loose detail ...

Also, they saved on film as each roll, when loaded in my MP really stops after 35 exposures 😲

Excellent Charles. You really make that HP5 sing. Scan from print?

Thank you Christoph. Yes they are scans from prints, I'm hibernating and rediscovering negatives from long ago.

Also in Winsum, curiously this time the film hardly shows grain...

MP, 2/40C, Metropolis@100

Interesting experiences with film types and brave too as the results may vary. But such are the joys and rewards of working with film.

I’m looking for film with either a weak or non existent anti-halation layer. Any recommendations? PolyPan F 50 was ideal in this regard, but sadly withdrawn a good number of years ago. From my limited research there are very few remaining, one being Washi film F (used in medical analysis and having no halation layer).

Is it ok to answer your own question?

After many hours of ‘research’ I have identified ORWO DN21 (a copy film) having the characteristics required: the old world glow of pictures from a different age. Currently out of stock at many European stockists, but Lomography sell the same product, on individual cassettes (135 x 36), marketed as Babylon 13.

Individuals I’ve corresponded with are convinced that Formapan 100, 200 and 400 (35mm) have either an ineffective anti-halation coating, or none at all. However, the manufacturers data sheet details a different story. Anyone have real-life examples showing the tell-tale halation around bright sources of illumination?
Thanks!

If you look for colour film the cinestill 50 and 800 will do. They both seem to have washed off the black carbon (gunk) layer that’s on the original vision 3 emulsion.

In b&w I don’t know for sure what’s around. I know that some Lucky film did not have the layer, but when I tried it 15 years or so ago, it was full of telegraph lines. I have not touched that brand since.
I also believe some IR films lack that layer, likely Adox/Efke emulsions, so those too may not be available anymore.
Fomapan 100/200/400 has an ancient look, which I like, but I have never noticed a lack of anti-halation layer.
Orwo may indeed be a good option. Have you tried calling them directly? They may sell you a 100 meter roll for self-confection at a  favourable price?
Finally, if you have a good darkroom you could wash and dry any emulsion before use, which should get rid of the anti-halation layer (I think no chemicals such as soda are needed, but am not 100% sure)

The only darkroom I have is a tabletop-collapsible-semi-rigid-dark-tent, so no options for pre-conditioning emulsion, I’m afraid.
I came across Lucky SHD on eBay as part of my interweb activity, and ordered 7 expired rolls to see if it lives to expectations, that being the manufacturers thought it was too costly to add an anti-halation layer. I couldn’t order 1 roll, it was 7 or nothing.

Cheating, I’m not sure ? but I’ve been looking at the Tiffen black pro mist filter. Basically does the same thing. Looking at results I’d say the 1/8 is the more subtle in the range available.

Now there’s a possibility! 😡 Sugar, hadn’t thought of that! Do you know if it’s a problem or not, have you encountered it or heard of it happening? If it’s packaged, as it appears to be, with individual canisters should be a barrier. But could be wrong.
