To J.H.S.M., killed in action, March 13, 1915.

(Written/composed in the trench)

O Brother, I have sung no dirge for thee:

Nor for all time to come

Can song reveal my grief's infinity:

The menace of thy silence made me dumb.

Poem by Robert W. Sterling ( later, also killed in action at Ypres, April 23, 1915)

I was gifted an old book of Robert W Sterling's poetry by my landlady when I was 24 and stationed in Scotland. Inside the book was a small envelope with contents, below. It seems, somehow appropriate here, following these two comments.

It is owed to Robert W. Sterling, for the treasure the book has been to my life since receiving it.

Thank you Wayne, not least for the reminder that the most glorious beauty and the most unspeakable tragedy often reside much closer to each other than we’d ever care to imagine.

In 2016 we had a Leica meeting in Tilburg in the Netherlands. Paulus, the organiser led us to an exhibition of a Leica photographer (you can search the www under: Creyghton & van Duijnhoven) who, 100 years after WW1 visited the battlefields and took pictures there - wonderful landscapes that mostly hide the horrible past. The book to the exhibition has the title: "Hadden we maar dezelfde taal gesproken" ("Had we only talked the same language").

Following the above exhibition I got a book by Johan van Couwenberge (Opus 14-18, in Dutch), which lists and briefly describes the lives of 50 or so artists from all sides that lived through or died in the war, composers, painters, poets... the extend of senseless waste is still not comprehensible.

I think I'm going to start a series called something like "Cars in Pedestrian Historical Areas". Very Italian!

I'm on the floor, gasping, and the green oxygen bottle is just out of reach! The ongoing conundrum of marrying the circle and the rectangle! Well, half circle plus the imaginary sketching what's absent. It's so beautiful, mesmerizing, and deadly toxic. What an anachronistic flyby, and you probably thought I wasn't up to it, Phil, but I managed, after more time than I would confess, located my house next to the lagoon at the tip of the tiny cerise splotch wading the cerulean sea. And things are looking more than slightly apocalyptic. It's 1498 with Durer working on the first artist's book in history, translating the Book of Revelation into allegorical woodcut visuals. What will emerge from the black hole draining gravity from the Universe, the seven-headed beast?

Yes. A couple of Saturdays ago I went for a solo walk.

Recognised the tall facade in the background. When we visited there was a wedding on ther, lots of uniformed participants. Beautiful city.

From my new ongoing series "Cars in Pedestrian Historical Areas" 😂

To be fair, residents can probably drive in there. I would not allow parking though.

I like very much this photo for the composition and the excellent grey tones you get from HP5. Great idea for a series, an italian series 🙂 , bravo. I wait to see more.

I think you are on to something with this new project; and you are good at it. I can think of many times i cursed, under my breath :), the fact that there was a car in the way. Taking that problem and making something out of it.............It makes me laugh. I am enjoying it.

Thanks,

Wayne
