Interesting article of Erwin Puts about film (IlfordD100) versus digital (M8) in print

from Dave (David Strachan) post in film thread

http://www.imx.nl/photo/Film/styled-3/

quotation :

"It is clearly visible that even a 100 ISO film has more reproduction capabilities than a 10 Mp sensor, specifically at major enlargements. Film holds fine detail to a larger extent than digital does and can indeed reproduce this detail in print (at least at 15+ enlargements).
Other experiments (see the Zeiss site) indicate that the differences between a 12 Mp and a 24Mp sized sensor are less significant than often assumed.
So we need at least a 40Mp sized sensor to visibly surpass the 100ISO film emulsion properly exposed and printed on paper"

Personally, I really have zero intrest in which format has the better resolution or is technically better. I hardly use iso 100, 50 or even lower.

Usually 400 which I can push to 1600 or 3200 if wanted.

Maybe it has more, maybe it has less resolution than my M240, but whereas I can see the smallest detail on the the digital monster, that same detail gets lost because of the grain on my film. And possibly because I don't have a 10.000-20.000 euro Flextight and I don't have a complete darkroom to do my own prints.

The only reason I also shoot film is because of the looks HP5Plus is giving me. Or film like Portra for the times I shoot color.

The day someone gives me a call to shoot and deliver a print of 10 meters on the longest side, I'll start worrying about technical aspects of film vs digital.

Not sure if I should feel good because I probably never need to worry about it, or if I should feel sad, because I'm not good enough to earn money on photography.

Before reading the article by E Puts, I noticed already when comparing my picture reproduced with a prof. Epson inkjet printer of my lab Leica center and the same enlarged picture (same size) on silver paper

As you said Allen, I did not need to enlarge on a wall .... and there I'll see the "square pixels" instead of grains !

I've been messing around some more with Qualls' monobath. Streaking from too much or too little agitation is a problem, but it's so simple and quick to use I shall persevere.

Firstly some from the M7 and Plus-X:

and if the forum won't break, here's a non-Leica picture showing you can even develop XP2 in the monobath:
