This wasn't with extension rings, just at minimum focusing distance of the 80 Planar. Shooting at EI100 allowed the narrow DOF.

Thanks, Adam. I wasn't taking any care over the lighting (and messed up the exposure estimates) - This was just about seeing if i could focus the MP-E 65mm using my EOS-1V HS.

The MP-E is a wonderful lens, running 1:1 to 5:1, and focusing is done by moving the camera.

It encourages me to try using my waterdrop set-up on film. Forgive the digital, but this is what I used to do...

I think it will translate well to Ektar, and even better to Velvia, if I can convince myself to face up to the processing cost...

Eoin I think you have the tripod for these nice pictures

Your aperture is open at f/8 ? speed >1000

Can you tell us more technical details of your shots ?

Thanks Eoin

Tytan - these are fantastic! Very moody and quite mysterious.

My son James and I toured the American Southwest in 2009. He took a large format camera and I had my R8 and a bunch of lenses. We'd visited Bryce canyon earlier in the day, and decided we'd go back later in the evening when the light would be better. We were surprised to have the whole place virtually to ourselves!

Thank you Henry!

I recently reacquainted myself with film after a hiatus of about 10 years. How I've missed it! I find myself now without much motivation/inspiration to pick up my digital M ;)

And yes, I love the CineStill 800T ... and their 50D film as well.

You said "vivid" red color ?

Only film can give it without correction. No equivalent elsewhere

Henry,

You won't find E6 processing any harder than C-41, just more boring! The big thing about it is that the slides are very easy to scan, with no issues about colour inversion.

Hi, Henry.

Yes, camera was mounted on a tripod. Exposure was long (5+ seconds), in total darkness, with the capture being with flash-only. I used a set of 3 piezo valves, with tightly controlled open > close sequences, and delays to allow the 1st drop to rebound to full height, before being hit by the 2nd and 3rd drops, each of which are a different colour. I used food colouring in water / water with corn syrup / water with milk to get the different effects.

It takes a lot of setting up, and digital has a clear advantage in being able to see the results immediately, allowing for making tiny adjustments (milliseconds) to the opening durations and delays. My next plan is to set it up with digital, and then take the fine-tuned shot with film. The MP-E lens should allow me to use the full frame, rather than the crops that were used in these shots.

These are really artistic, Eoin.  You've got a great talent!  I had the thought about which film stock would be best at replicating these.  I also had Velvia 50 and Ektar in mind.  However, the more I think about it the more it is clear to me that the frozen motion wouldn't be achievable with such slow films, unless you had a massive amount of light, and if it was artificial light you'd need an advanced degree in lens filters to figure out the right combo of filters to use to correct the colors.  MAYBE if you pushed the Velvia 50 a stop and since you are exposing for the highlights you get an extra stop over the Ektar, which you'd need to slight ETTR.  With really good evenly lit natural light and shot fairly wide open it might be doable.  A sight I'd like to see!

Thanks, Adam. I wasn't taking any care over the lighting (and messed up the exposure estimates) - This was just about seeing if i could focus the MP-E 65mm using my EOS-1V HS.

Love the results.  I think this film works best in these multi-colored lighting situations.

I lived on Camden Road in 1976, and these characters were everywhere, being drawn to what was then the Camden Hippodrome on Crowndale Road. I was more drawn to the Spread Eagle on Parkway for some Young's Winter Warmer. Otherwise, this photo of 19 year-old Pippa dates to the spring of 1977 on the Regent's Canal:
