I took the shot below a few minutes before walking up to the tree and taking the shot in post #46223. Also taken with the M3/Summron-M 28mm lens on Portra 400, it's somewhat different in color than the latter shot because the light was different, but it's somewhat more like some images I had taken 15 minutes earlier with the M10, which I discussed in a post I started with the title, Film vs Digital: Look to Cinematography for Clues.

I believe the guy with the speed graphic is a well known fixture, I know I've seen him a couple of times.

Nice series of photographs.

Yeah that's Louis Mendes :)

Here's an article about him if you'd like to know more: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/photo-booth/new-york-citys-most-classic-street-photographer

"Forum discussions on film vs digital are often terminated by statements like, “I’m sick of talking about film vs digital’’; or, “They’re different media and look different”; or, on the film-chauvinist thread, “Film always looks better.”"

Not a terribly promising start, Mich, to be frank. What is the thread that you refer to as the "film-chauvinist thread"? Because if it's this one to which you refer I think anyone with half a brain and any insight at all would recognize it as consistently the most supportive, least fractious thread on the forum. People are here to help and support one another, gain ideas and resolve problems, and admire each others' work and learn something about different film stocks, developers, scanning techniques (including, yes, using a digital camera to scan) and a whole lot more besides. Many of us are here because we do think film looks better. Others are here - perhaps they use digital as well as film - because they know there is an incredible amount of knowledge and respect given on this thread and it is probably the best place in Leica-land to share their film photographs. There is in fact very little discussion here about film vs digital other than some people will express reasons and opinions as to, in their experience, why film may work better than digital. Much like you have done in your quite interesting - apart from the unnecessary opening - link (above).

Insulting contributors to this thread will get you nowhere, Mich. Being a thoughtful, reasoned person, as you are clearly capable, will see you and your contributions welcomed.

Phil - A little over-sensitive, no? I did not mean it to be an insult, only an characterization — and no implications that people here are not helpful — only a characterization that is easily identifiable.

chauvinist
ˈʃəʊv(ɪ)nɪst/
noun
noun: chauvinist; plural noun: chauvinists
  1. 1.
a person displaying aggressive or exaggerated patriotism.
    • a person displaying excessive or prejudiced support for their own cause, group, or sex.
"she wrote off all the local males as hopeless chauvinists"
synonyms: sexist, male chauvinist, misogynist, woman-hater, anti-feminist, male supremacist; More
      informalmale chauvinist pig, MCP
"he learned to show women some respect, but he's still a chauvinist"

Quite right Mich - a little over-sensitive - most certainly no. Trying to get a laugh by insulting another is the height of bad manners. You can call it a characterization - "a description of the distinctive nature or features of someone or something" if you like, but it still makes it a slight - what is the point of writing it in the first place? It's not funny or clever, it is only rude. The film thread could hardly be further from chauvinistic.

Another sunset pic from a recent road trip.

After driving for 2 hours under cloud cover and drizzle, I was lucky to  get a brief moment of sunshine as the sun was setting at around 9:40PM.

Ramesh,

Astonishingly beautiful as usual, and only 2 hours up the road ;)

What did you rate the NPC160 at for exposure. I’m sure I still have some in the freezer from 2008.

Cheers

J :)

The colors are nice.  However, I generally don't really like this lens for landscapes at least not at this aperture.  The horizon also seems to need leveling, or else it is just a matter of the various angles competing for the leveling anchor.

Very smart use of the film, Pete.  Anything red is taken to another level.

I like this, Mitch. What are the lilac coloured flowers growing there? (I can't quite make out the shape but look like some kind of mallow.)

I can't say I'm offended personally, Mitch, but this isn't the first time you've made snide remarks. I seem to remember you being even less charitable about this thread over on the rangefinderforum yet you still continue to take part here. Why?

No, just a type of common daisy. There was some ageratum in the area as well, but not in this picture.

On the RFF, I'm afraid you have a better memory that I do, for I have no recollection of that — and I quit RFF some 6-9 months ago. I wouldn't take it so seriously, as it was just a throw-away comment. I am sorry took it more seriously than I meant it. I have made a few serious comments here, but that was to point out something that simply was not true about the nature of digital files. Seems to me be people take this thing more seriously than would seem warranted to me. One thing that there's too much of, in my view, is people question motives excessively.
