Ramesh and Phil - Thanks very much, Gentlemen.  I really appreciate your feedback and time!

Great image. Love your work.

Thank you, sincerely, gnuyork, Adam and Henry - and to everyone who acknowledged my picture.

Adam, your photograph of Magic Hour from Central Park NYC is absolutely stunning. Such beautiful colour and balance. As I think I've said before, I imagine the SWC is a very difficult camera to use effectively - in my opinion, not even Lee Friedlander has been able to get it right all that often - but you use it exceptionally well. Bravo!

Holy sh$t this is awesome.  The pattern in the sand in the foreground looks like an imprint of a majestic sun.  Congrats and I can't wait to get to a beach! :)

Question;

I'm away to buy a 4 x 5 LF camera and wondered what film you guys use for Portraiture and landscape...........I've got an order in for film at B&H but haven't checked out yet.....see below

Neil - film is film.  What's with the question?

If it was me trying out a 4x5 in a controlled portrait setting with natural light, I would use Portra 160 and also Ektar (yes, Ektar, but be careful with the exposure and you  might want to bracket a little)

For landscapes, I would use Ektar, Velvia 50 (the larger surface area of the film should yield a little better DR) and Provia 100F.

Here's another from last Sunday in Central Park at sunset, overlooking the TRUMP ice skating ring (Henry - this is for you :)  )

There were a ton of people on the skating ring and I figured that having them all only very slightly blurred would come out amateurish, so I threw on a 6-stop ND filter and turned them into faint ghosts :)

Yes, can now. My original post was supposed to be "can't", but now I check it is there.

AWESOME shot, ye gods, how do you do this?

Ha, thanks.  :)

I used a 2 or 3 (can't remember) LEE medium ND grad filter to properly expose the sky.  (the new "medium' grads that were released by LEE last April are really perfect for NYC; before the release of the medium, there was only a soft and hard, which I consistently found either too soft or too hard : )

And the the ND filter to get an extra long exposure (with reciprocity failure was well over a minute, which gave me time to accept requests to take pictures of tourists as this is a hot tourist spot :)

Thanks Adam for your nice comment. Another slide for you

I bought 15 Kodachrome 64 in 2009  just to test in comparison with digital.

I sent them to Dwayne's lab Parsons US before they close.

Adam recently mentioned on another thread the possibility that it comes back  :)

Hope this will happen !

Colours and textures look great to me :)

Do you mean you rated the Portra at 1600 in bright light (pushing) or at 100 (pulling)?

The pulling in bright light would make more sense.

Cheers

J :)

Thanks. I was shooting in an indoor, very dark market and rated the film at 1600. Then, when I went out into the bright, noontime sunshine, I wanted to see how the film would do. Of course, the development had to be pushed 2 stops for the dark, indoor shots that were the bulk of the frames shot. But I like how the color and contrast came out in the outdoor shots. Very versatile film.

In that case, an excellent illustration of the film's versatility! It is my second favourite 35mm colour film (next to Ektar).

Cheers
