adam -- you and david alan harvey love the look of velvita :-)  here my first in a while, not a big deal but about 50 pages have gone by since i put something up ..... here is a picture of a really nice guy running his fruit stand down the block from my office. my task this weekend is to print and give him a copy .... fuji ga645 and protra 400 ....

Thanks, Steve - Velvita is one of the kings of film when used in the right setting.

As for your Afghani fruit seller friend, he is my friend too and pose for me once a couple of years back.  I actually had been meaning to give him a print but have been distracted.  Given his personality, I am sure he will be delighted to get the photo you made of him, which, b/c it was with film I like better than mine (although I like my lens (75 lux) better  :)

Thanks Adam, it is something akin to the series you shot from your "office" ages ago now, this was from mine.

No door, summers day, student flying, so less to do apart from monitor. Good time to shoot some aerials.

Gary

Well, you have "one-upped" me, Gary.    I much prefer your office.  Come to NYC and we'll take a helicopter ride together and shoot the city...

Staying with the cactus theme, but pivoting to some Ektar as after all the main subject is red  :p

SWC (yes, it does good bokeh :) )

I'd love to see his face when you give it to him.  He is so delightful.

This is a good shot Tony, very well balanced composition with strong lines.

This is my own view fwiw: I agree that 35mm is probably the most used lens, but feel that it is also very likely the mostly poorly used focal length.

It requires filling the frame with larger elements, just like you've done in the first two pictures, for there to be interesting, compelling or even striking results. Most 35mm photos I see are 'meh'-like where the photographer appears just to have pointed the lens at a scene to capture many smaller elements. It results in awfully boring photographs.

My speculation is that, with wider-than-35mm lenses, it is easier to achieve better results simply because going wider to really wide one is very aware of the need to fill the frame with features that stand out; otherwise everything just looks really small. But 35mm is so close to the 'normal' focal lengths that one is tempted to use it in the same as one would, for instance, a 50mm. Thus results boring photography.

All this to say that I like these three photos. The second one is dominated by the striking ceiling signs and the action underneath and the third one, which had it been a street scene would have been meh, is cool because of the simple composition with 3-4 very different elements and an ominous mood. Looking forward to more.

I like your theory, Philip. I'm going to pay more attention to it, as it rings true with many of my 35mm shots. I think the problem comes from it lying between the definite wide angle and normal, making it almost too 'normal' to arouse non-meh responses unless foreground / background demands are placed upon it (which it is very good at accepting).

On the other hand, though, being so normal, it is an excellent FL for documenting, where the content may be more important than the composition.

Recently acquired a Nikon Coolscan 5000, been loving the scans I'm getting from it! Shot with M6 and Summicron 35mm ASPH

I particularly like this shot, Tony. I have an ancient love of the tactile properties of how metallic surfaces handle light, and I like the composition, and the human element of your photo - Thank you.

As we watch you gain total Zen mastery over the elusive cactus captures, Adam, the Velvia 50 shots remain my favourite renderings so far. To me, the Provia looks the most 'realistic' (an abstract term, given I wasn't there), and the Ektar punches the red delightfully, but the Velvia sings the whole opera.

Sincere thanks, Eoin.  I have to agree with you.  This setting, with the plentiful evenly lit subject and colors galore, any other film really doesn't hold a candle to the velvia 50.  Having said, this, in Steve's words we are "velvita" lovers and may be skewed in our thinking and tastes :)

I have a bunch more coming, including some fun side-by-side comparisons of the velvia 50 and other films - so please stayed tuned!! :)
