I know that this is sort of off topic but I was so excited I had to share.

I did my first ever darkroom test print!

How freaking exciting watching this print come to life.

I made some huge mistakes but it was very enjoyable.

I suggest the strip to the right of the face, or maybe to the right of that one. The brightest part of the image is the little bit of beard on his left cheek. That bit should probably be just slightly darker than the white border (it needs to show a little detail of his beard).

Once you nail down the exposure for the highlight, change the filters to get richly detailed shadows, and a little maximum black somewhere - probably the black spot on his shirt just under his beard. I assume you are using Ilford or equivalent filters. Filters 00 - 3.5 require the same exposure. Filters 4-5 require doubling the exposure (so Ilford says - this is not so precise, but is good enough as a rule of thumb).

But the approach is find the exposure for the highlights, the change the filters to produce the shadows and blacks you want.

Work at it in an organized way - and don't be satisfied with mud. The print should have a full range of values. Don't quit until you have that, and don't be mesmerized just because there is an image on the paper.

I was just watching a video explaining that too. (by coincidence.)

very nice one.  Great blacks.  Bet it would make a lovely print.

Thank you, Adam.   I originally printed a silver-gelatin set of these twenty years ago for my wife's office.  That set is now hanging in my living room.  I've scanned the negatives and had metallic 11x14 prints made that have hung in some galleries and I've sold a couple of sets.   I think I should fire up my darkroom and make a couple more silver-gelatin sets just to have available.  :)

Of course, I have them matted and framed, but this is roughly how they display together.  they make a nice set.

That "Dawn' developer sure does a good job!

Seriously, I mostly use paper negatives in my 10x8, and watching the image appear under the safelight is a thrill that hasn't faded a bit in the last 40+ years. Keep it up, get addicted: it will be a lasting pleasure for you.

Very nice RP (and a completely appropriate tangent to the thread, I think). I hope to set up a darkroom soon. We just have to buy a house first  :o

This gentleman seems to have enjoyed sunbathing on a rather nice-looking property in Nice.

Sorry Henri, not meant to be unfriendly, but isn't this about the seventh time that you post this image?

Hi Otto,

Thank you for the interest you have, about my comments film versus digital.

We're both perfectionists  or at least people trying to have a critical mind, not like others who hear everything they are told.

That said , the logic and the principle of pixels versus film grain want to be so , with the help of camera photo software that consistently smooth EVERYTHING inevitably.

We do not need crop or other evidence, but I attach myself for some time to wonder why the digital image can not satisfy me.

I can always follow all these people at every new change or new purchase releases and track the pixels or Isos race or electronic rangefinder, but reason tells me that the current digital image is not sufficient and satisfactory. Perhaps the Sigma Foveon sensor **  would provide the solution (sensor with 3 layers RGB) . To see in the future !

That,  I do not know if my answer suits you, but I have evidence and if you want , open another  thread  and I'll post other evidence, other than those you mentioned above.

Otherwise, post some photos here and in other sections , I will look at them and I will comment

Another proof,  just look at this thread open for over two years and the increasing number of contributors with their pictures :)

Another visible anomaly :  look at the picture of "Skogkatt 59" (MM1)  , legs of people in the center slightly to the right ,the girl with the white bag (11th post) , you see the squares pixels stair , more visible if you crop ?  never see this in film !

http://www.summilux.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4781&start=360

Now you do what you want, I do not force anyone to follow me , keep the digital if you like it. :)

I still have 2 digital cameras but I don't use them. They stay most of time in my Billingham bag :)

I do not sell them because too depreciate. A M8 is now sold at 800 Euros or M240 E 4200 Euros for a new price that is twice.

You have said "depreciate" ?

For your information , analog M6 sells for around 1000-1200 E.

Best regards

Henry
