Advertisement Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Hi newyorkone, Take a look here 90 APO ASPH test with Leica M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ForeverUnknown Posted April 4, 2007 Share #2 Posted April 4, 2007 Not the most interesting subject, but it's sharp! My next lens is going to be the non-ASPH version. $3000 is a heck of a lot to pay for a lens I might not use that often on a RF.

The current version does of course have higher micro-definition wide open and (to a diminishing degree) below 5.6, but it is very sharp at mid-apertures and you may well come to like its distinct large-aperture fingerprint too. Note: It is not insensitive to flare. – I do in fact think that the M8 has given new life to the old classic. newyorkone Posted April 4, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted April 4, 2007 Not the most interesting subject, but it's sharp! My next lens is going to be the non-ASPH version. $3000 is a heck of a lot to pay for a lens I might not use that often on a RF. "test" shot Last time I visited B&H they had at least 4 90 summicrons and almost no other M lenses in the used department. Heck, people are sold out of new and used M lenses everywhere. Not sure if they were ASPH or pre but you should give them a ring and see what they are going for. After Passover of course as they are currently closed. For some reason this lens doesn't resell very well as you can see from the supply level and lack of demand just at B&H. Used ones go for as low as $1200 for the ASPH version and I've seen the pre go for under 1K. I had considered selling it since I hardly ever used it with the M6 but I it never seemed worth it since I would be losing so much. Now I'm glad that I kept it. The M8 really gives this lens new life. Who needs unsharp mask when you get detail like this straight out of the camera!
leicamr Posted April 4, 2007 Share #5 Posted April 4, 2007 Yes, the 90 APO is stunning. I have just bought the 75 Summicron which I also like very much. My Leica dealer advised me that the 75mm has affected sales of the 90, but as I already own it I would never sell it. I recently used the 90 APO on the M8 to photograph Joseph Zawinul at the Jazz Cafe, London. When I get the chance to switch on my computer (at home) I will post some results. As mentioned in above posts, not only do you get stunning resolution out of these APO / ASPH lenses they don't suffer from flare, even wide open. Of course, if the results are too sharp they could be softened in Photoshop! Regards Mark
ddp Posted April 4, 2007 Share #6 Posted April 4, 2007 This lens is crazy sharp with the M8!!! I'm speechless... That lens is crazy sharp, period. There are some that say it is too sharp...but I suspect they need to learn to use it properly.
