Last saturday (may 25th), as part of Festspill2013 (Bergen International Festival), artists Laurel Jay Carpenter (USA) and Terese Longva (Norway) offered an art performance at Bergen’s main square, Torgallmenningen. They called it “Thirst” and it was very interesting and meaningfull.

“Two women fill vessels with water and walk towards their goal – a drinking glass. But the jugs leak steadily down their dresses, and the glass can never be filled. Thirst is inspired by the global water crisis and the story of the Danaides in Greek mythology. The Danaides were King Danaos’ 50 daughters who killed their husbands whom they were forced to marry. As punishment, they had to forever carry water in leaking vessels.By recalling and repeating this punishment, the artists creating Thirst depict the never-ending effort of the entire labour force. They also raise questions more specifically related to women’s history and personal choices. Are our individual and political actions enough?”
