...some photographers were most annoyed about was the 'Ken Burns' panning effects on the new flickr slideshow. Guess what? It's already gone!

Small point, it's only gone if you tag '/show' to the end of the URL, which isn't automatically going to happen if someone decides to play a slide show of a set. Other than that I agree with just about everything you say.

So this, then, is the value if flickr for me: the facility for finding easily photographs that are in some way related to what I may be shooting at a particular time and thereby helping me to explore a certain direction. In fact the new portfolio page layout facilitates this type of exploration because it shows one person's faves, or his or hers current photography, spread out before you like of a contact sheet — more like a medium format contact sheet than a 35mm one. Looking at faves or work by people who liked one of your particular pictures, you can judge how that fits in with what that person likes or shoots — this can be of high value and is facilitated by the new portfolio page layout. Doing this, one isn't dealing with the zillions of shots that are worthless to oneself. And don't bother to go to flckr Explore...

I couldn't agree more regarding the exploration and discovery value - Flickr remains the largest photography repository by far and you are bound to find some great work in there.

However, the speed/usability of the new layout is a hindrance when it comes to interacting with your contacts/groups and managing your photostream. This, in turn, reduces your chances of your pictures being seen by others whose work may be interesting to you - what if everyone doesn't bother to go to Explore anymore, or to look at individual pictures because the tiles are "good enough", or to leave comments because it's slow and cumbersome?

I'd argue that the new approach may actually reduce, not increase, the appeal of Flickr as a community website. Time will tell.

The somewhat crammed look of the new masonry layout can easily be changed by the site designers - it's just a couple of css settings in the stylesheets: if enough people request it, I imagine flickr will allow for some sort of simple personal preference settings which increases the margins between images.

The same goes for the black backgrounds of the larger images - a one-line change to the css. I certainly believe that with gentle persuasion flickr/yahoo will introduce a lot more customizability to the site.

[...]

Naturally flickr need to address some serious usability issues - the (pretty much universally-hated) infinite scroll isn't suited to groups with 67,000 images for instance (how do you resume where you last left off?) And the interface does need a lot of tweaking and fixing, but when the dust has settled, and the disgruntled few have left, flickr will be a much better place to show and look at images (imo).

I very much hope you are right. Again, time will tell.

With the negativity that's been floating around the net they may be prepared to do so to keep a user 'onside'.

I was ready to subscribe to the pro service, to increase the 200 photo limit, but I shan't be bothering now that limit has been removed.

The FAQ says you can have a pro-rata refund. But the pro does still give unlimited storage, not that I can see 1TB being used up :D

It is still/was the cheapest way to go ad-free.

How does one return to the image gallery?

For example, do a search for photos using the word "test."

Then a bunch of images come. You can even click on one of the images. However after clicking on a image, how do you get back to the series of images titled "test?"

Use the previous page button on your web browser? Seems to work for me.

Thanks. I know that seems simple, however I just realized that does not work for Explorer 10. However that does work for Chrome.

Going "back" in Explorer gets me to "kittens." And going back in Chrome gets me back to the original "test" list of images.

Ok, now that I know it works in Chrome. When I click on one of the "test" images, and continue to view 10 more images in the "light box," how do I return back to the original list of "test" images without having to go back 10 times?

When I browse a list of pages all of which I want to open in turn, I either use (in Safari) CMD-klick of SHIFT-klick to open the subject pages either in new tabs or in the reading list. Hence, I don't leave the directory or index page at all and have - several seconds later - all the images at the ready.

I'm glad you said that as that's what I finally came to the conclusion to do. I right click open in new tab. I'll try a shortcut like your doing, that would probably be a lot better.

Also what I'm noticing and hence, better to do what you suggested, if I'm 10 PAGES down and click on a picture and then go back, I'm near the beginning again and have to scroll down 10 pages just to get the area where I left off.

What I'm realizing, is the list of images is like a quick slide show of sorts (that you have to scroll.) I tried to do a slide show within the "light room" only for it to bring up a whole other set of images that have nothing to do with the topic.

But what the frak is this new Yahoo bar that appears on every page and cannot be removed?

I didn't mind most of the recent changes, but that bar looks crass. Especially when it's immediately above another tool bar - and in purple!

There are ways of removing it if you use Chrome or Firefox, but you're unlucky if you use IE. I use safari and I could get the bar to disappear using AdBlock, but then there was a transparent gap between the Flickr toolbar and the top of the page. As they might tag it on Twitter - #Fail.

None of this shit on Ipernity. They have now written scripts to allow mass movement of sets. It's more community-minded too. I haven't looked back.

Flickr will continue in it's death spiral.

Bill

It's just a pity that very few people seem to be looking at the photographs, and surely that's one of the main reasons for sharing images online (otherwise why do it?) - this isn't just aimed at you by the way, it sems to be an issue for many people.

It is atrocious, that bar. Yahoo's blatant disregard for its paying customers is shocking.

I have looked at ipernity but I don't like the layout. That guestbook thingy reminds me of Apple's terrible iCal with fake leather. The whole site feels dated, actually.

I didn't mind Flickr's new layout and enjoy the very active community. Comments on one's photos is inspiring. In a way I hope they'll allow permanent removal of it, at least for paying members (though given how Marissa M and gang have treated us so far my hopes are not high).

I might just let my Flickr account lapse and feed photos to my own site from Slideshow Pro Director. But then I lose the community etc. A-nno-ying.

I was willing to remain on Flickr.

Now they've gone too far. Really.

What Yahoo bar? Not on my Flickr, but perhaps like advertising on LUF it only appears when you don't stump up a bit of money? It seems everybody is blaming Flickr by alternative standard's that they use for other web sites. As for Ipernity, well I have transferred everything from Flickr to there just in case, but frankly it is the rolling tumbleweed as photo sharing web sites go, it just 'looks' like Flickr of old, it doesn't have the same community spirit by a long, long way. As to the people who have removed things from Flickr and deleted their accounts, I think they have shot themselves in the foot very prematurely, a very childish and panic stricken reaction to changes that need time to work themselves through.

Really, you don't have this bar?

I don't have it either once I am signed in using my rolled over pro account. It is the same as the forum here, pay up and you won't see ads ( though other free account holders visiting your flickr page will). I don't see the bar on your flickr page nor mine. See here for ad free account...

p.s. I am assuming that ad free will work in the same way as my rolled over pro account. I would certainly count that stupid Yahoo bar as an ad.
