I spent a few days in Las Vegas last week and brought the M8 along for the ride. No Elvis sightings, but plenty of inspiration for photo taking. The trip provided a great opportunity to experiment with the CV12 and Leica 135 apo on a few shots. Here's the link:

Thanks for the comments Guy, Philip, Lambert and Charles. No tripod ... just a Luigi strap as I walked among the crowds.

Guy, the CV12 is nice as I keep it set on infinity and fire away at anything I feel is interesting. Since I purchased it several months ago, I haven't used the CV15. Even when the WATE arrives, I will keep this lens as it is really wide and a lot of fun to shoot with on the M8.

I found the 135 to be much easier to work with than I thought it would be to use. I simply use my right thumb to push up the 90mm frame and use a distance about half way between the focus patch and the 90mm frame as my imaginary frame.

Although I miss the reach of the longer lenses I once had with the module system, the 135 can be used for a few wildlife shots ... the attached is from a few minutes ago.

Wow--nice shots, Kurt! I just got back from Vegas myself, and am working through the ton of shots I took, mostly at night!

I mainly used the CV 15, 21 and 28, and the Leica 35 lux, Nocti and 75 lux. That I can take all that, plus the 50 lux, 24 and 28 Elmarit Leicas in a small bag (with three batteries) just kills me!

I'll post a link to somewhere when they're done!

Thanks for all of the comments. Guy, you will be impressed with the 135 apo. I bought the CV12 lens from cameraquest.

Jamie, I look forward to the link when you can post it...it's a great city for night photography.

Bruce, I'm smitten with the Noctilux. But, I also love the 50lux asph. I brought both with because I find it hard to choose between the two. All of the M glass is simply wonderful.

Dear Kurt

Great to see your shots. How is the apo 135? Do you miss the goggles? I have not done much with M8 since it was in Solms recovery!

Just got back. I have now a viso and telyt 400mm from Tony (great condition and R and M tubes!)

Hiowever, it is quite big and scary to be in public with such a big lens (esp when it looks like an anti-plane missle launcher!)

How did you decide on the APO 135 Did you consider the 2.8? others ? I guess there must be 10 different 135mm for the M cameras.

best

Regards

Hi Victor, the 135 apo is more expensive, but I don't have to mess with the goggles. I am able to focus very well with and without the magnifier. The 3.4 is very nice because it keeps the size of the lens down but keeps the focus zone large enough that it is hard to miss getting accurate focus wide open. I'm impressed, the lens is very sharp wide open. I struggled with decision of which version to choose, but went with the apo version because it is the latest formulation. I also like the Leica apo "look" in longer lenses (after having most of the long R lenses at one time.) Also, Tony at Popflash had a used copy that was priced right. ;)

My first M8 came back last week also ... I'm amazed at how long the whole repair and return took. If I hadn't picked up a second body, I would have pulled my hair out.

Please post a few images of the set-up and the results of the 400mm set-up. I'm curious, but like the simple, more managable lengths ... for now.

Hi Roger, with the CV12 I've been too lazy to add a filter. Since there seems to be a bit of distortion with the whole super wide look, I keep telling myself that any color variation just adds to the effect. ;)

Kurt do you think there is a way to fit a IR filter inside the front mount like the 15mm that folks are doing. Could always use a 72 filter holder but like to aviod that or just go naked with this lens

Oh--I *did* see Elvis when I was there, BTW :)

hate to be a downer but since i assume you are looking for critiques... the one shot of the fence with the escort service cards is the only shot in the series that has any kind of "leica" flavor to it. just my opinion of course and i do love that shot of the fence, its outstanding. keep at it....b

Thanks for all of the comments. Tim, the comment about having an "individual eye" means a lot.

Thanks for the feedback Brad. Don't worry about it being a downer as I'm my own worst critic. By the way, I remember your series from New Orleans last year ... and I hated it. (Just kidding, it was excellent ... and very Leica-like.) ;)
