Guest SUMOLUX Posted June 1, 2013 Share #22 Posted June 1, 2013 Can we discuss 35mm film perforation sizes and shapes next? Can Arriflex modify a 3 perf camera to 2 perf ? Or shall we move on BTW the perfs do make a difference of you shoot movie film in a motor drive body, sometimes. I'm off to mx some Beutler now Hello Chris, You would be the person to ask about this I think: Did Leica ever release the DX reader barcodes to the public? I mean: with today's printers it might be very simple to print a sticker to put on a blank roll to allow it to be used without resulting in a continual blinking light for hand set ISO on the M7? Many thanks.
andybarton Posted June 2, 2013 Share #23 Posted June 2, 2013 The codes aren't Leica's, they are an industry standard DX coding on film cassettes
chris_livsey Posted June 2, 2013 Share #24 Posted June 2, 2013 Hello Chris, You would be the person to ask about this I think:. Too kind. Did Leica ever release the DX reader barcodes to the public?I mean: with today's printers it might be very simple to print a sticker to put on a blank roll to allow it to be used without resulting in a continual blinking light for hand set ISO on the M7? Many thanks. Andy has provided the best link, but You can purchase ready printed bar codes: Firstcall DX Recoder Labels, ISO 64 The P&P is high if that is all you want and it appears to be 64 ASA/ISO only. The issue is there are two readers in the M7 series as we have discussed previously. For the optical reader you could indeed print on a computer or you could use an approach similar to the 6 bit lens coding and use a black felt tip and white correction fluid or similar. Note you only need the ASA/ISO positions coded as the M7 does not read the supplementary data encoded. Another overview which I find easier to follow is here: DX coding on film cassettes If you have the electrical contact PIN reader, or indeed another camera that does as most use the electrical contacts because of the closing door ensuring good contact, your other alternatives are: Paint over the bit you don't want and scratch off the bit you do, assuming a pre-coded cassette and you want to change it or a re-load of different ASA/ISO. Use some conductive tape, eg copper self adhesive, to cut out a bar code, you could use a template for accuracy. Surprisingly easy to fine eg in the UK B&Q: Verve Copper Slug Tape, BQ098 In the US: Conductive Tapes, Adhesive Tabs, Silver, Aluminum, Carbon, Copper On e-bay lots https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-VRaC6uBHFIo/TjEhHQ7kvwI/AAAAAAAADkI/ioGeFlMNZhU/s800/dx.jpg You can purchase ready coded empty cassettes as well: http://www.silverprint.co.uk/keywordsearchresults.asp http://www.firstcall-photographic.co.uk/products/855/firstcall-reloadable-cassettes-metal-dx100-pack-of-10 Best
MachineGun Posted June 21, 2013 Author Share #25 Posted June 21, 2013 If you have the reader changed, Leica will check your camera over at the same time. The optical reader is not without its faults or issues, especially if you like to set your ISO manually, which will leave an LED flashing in the viewfinder. This may or not be an issue for you. Andy I am still undecided as to what camera I want, MP or M7. Do the reader work OK if you have it set to Auto read? Does the led in the VF only flash when you have it set to film speed? Thanks MachineGun

analog-photo Posted July 6, 2013 Share #27 Posted July 6, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) It is well documented on this forum the problems with the mechanical DX-reader in early production M7 (search for "M7 blinking red dot"). Leica later changed to optical readers in production and offered those who experienced problem a change free of charge. I have two M7 that made the trip to Solms and have had no issues with them afterwards. I do not know if the free-of-charge-option is still offered. Farkle-Mpls Posted July 10, 2013 Share #28 Posted July 10, 2013 I had my M7's DX reader converted to optical earlier this year by Leica (while it was in for a CLA and minor repair). The DX conversion was done at no (additional) cost so I expect even now they will still do it for free. They also replaced the leatherette at no additional charge per a note they including indicating that it was lifting off the body. I hadn't noticed that but it got a complete re-skinning, including the rear door and the battery compartment door. Nice job Leica!
