What exactly is the function of a hot shoe on the M3 and M4? I'm guessing that it has to do with a flash connection. But isn't that the purpose of the 2 outlets on the rear, (x-sync & bulb sync)?

Does the camera have to be sent in to repair to have the accessory shoe converted to a "hot" shoe? I remember having my M3 shoe upgraded many years ago, but don't remember exactly what was done.

It's not a hot shoe, it's an accessory shoe... for viewfinders, meters and the like. Accessory shoes existed long before they were made hot, for the above and for rangefinders in the days before they were built-in.;)

I just read in Dennis Laney's book that the M4-2 came with a hot shoe, used for electronic flash connection, in addition to the 2 plugs on the back of the body. I am assuming that this feature made it unnecessary to deal with annoying dangling wires

when using an electronic flash unit connected via the accessory shoe.

My main question is - Can an ordinary shoe be upgraded easily to electronic, or does it require an expensive internal wiring?

I doubt that it would be cost-effective to make it a hot shoe. It would probably be better to just get something like this. Note that it is just the single pole type. The camera has no smarts for a more sophisticated Leica flash anyway.

The M4-P has a hot shoe, too.

Hello Everybody,

The first M with hot shoe was the M5 which has:

1. Hot shoe on top.

2. Standard PC Bulb connection on the back of the camera body.

3. Standard PC Electronic Flash (Blitz) connection on the back of the camera body.

Each is an independent circuit.

Best Regards,

Michael
