SD Card Problems

Having finally got my M8, I now find that I can't use it. The SD card that the dealer supplied (Silicon Power SDHC, 4Gb) tells me, in the viewfinder that it's 'full'. leaving the camera inoperative. I assumed that it needed formatting, so I followed the procedure for doing this. The red light started blinking, and I assumed that the process was underway. It took well over an hour (Iwent off do do something more interesting) and when I came back, the red light had stopped blinking, the menu was showing on the screen, and the battery was showing zero. I assumed that the card was formatted, however. But when I recharged the battery and switched on, the card still claimed to be full. Have I got a dud card? Or did something go wrong in the formatting? Or is it the wrong card? I tried to find the list of approved cards from the M8 page on the Leica website, but I can't see a link.

Any thoughts?

David

I have a 133x 2GB Lexar card that will do this on occasion. When that happens, I take it out of the camera and put it in the card reader attached to the computer, and empty the files on the card into the trash. Then it works. It may only have have a dozen files on it, but the M8 still claims it is full and the little red light will happily blink away forever, just as you experienced.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my question. The card was supplied, with my M8, by Classic Cameras in London, who now only sell Leica products. You'd think that they would know which card to supply. It's good to know that this is the - easily corrected - problem.

David, sorry to hear of your problem. Yes, the dealer should have known better. I think the card they supplied you with will work in the Digiluxes - Panasonic's SDHC connection and all that.

I've just ordered another three 4GB SD cards from MobyMemory in the UK that myself and others have found will work in the M8.

MobyMemory - Product Details on memory cards for mobile phones UKP 24.99 + 1.60 first class post. The cards are Transcend TS4GSD150 which are 150x SD and not SDHC.

Good luck!

Ahh... Classic and their "Leica only" claims. I think if you look closely, you will see Voigtlander and Zeiss items there as well. (So maybe they mean "only things which fit onto Leicas") I shopped there until I learned they only valued customers with more money than brains.

Watch it Steve, I still shop there! :D . You will find the only CV items they have are old stock and they will not be replaced. That's after Robert White who are the sole importers would not supply dealers below their selling price, so I'm informed.

No offence meant, but I am surprised that anyone on this list still shops there. There are better options close by, IMHO. Classic has nice displays and possibly they have improved their customer service (it had nowhere to go but up). I stopped shopping there some years ago, but while I was in the store actually looking at their then-current CV display, I overheard the salesperson on the phone rather snottily telling a caller that they "only" dealt in Leica equipment. (This seems to be a marketing point for them and probably gives them some leverage with Leica.) It seems every time I went in that shop, I overheard some conversation that should have been private - including one where Classic was complaining (to Leica?) loudly about another retailer's advertising. I wasn't eavesdropping - I would have needed earplugs not to overhear.

Shame to hear RW is involved in retail price fixing. Illegal in the US and Canada (but still "encouraged" by distributors) but the UK seems to be more lax on such matters.

Thanks to Robert for the info on cards. I also discover that I'll need a card-reader to update the software. I'll ask in my local town.

Like Steve, I'm not impressed with the service at CC. They have had a lot of my money in the past, but I think I'll look for another supplier.

It seems that there are now no over-the-counter sales of CV equipment - as far as I can discover - since the importer will not give adequate trade discounts.

In the absence of an SD card, I tried out my new M8 tethered by a USB cable to the computer - it works very well, but it's not exactly portable. It looks like the conversion from wet to digital printing is going to be a steep learning curve for me, so I'll be posting more questions in the weeks ahead.

David

P.S. Just ordered the card that Robert recommended, plus a card reader, for half the price that CC wanted to charge me for the wrong card. Thanks again!

I asked about this today. Apparently they were misinformed by Leica UK, which now results in them having unsuitable stock and having to find alternatives as replacements for customer returns.

Despite my opinions of CC, one shouldn't be too hard on them as they make the transition into the digital world. Their specialisation in Leica (and related :-) products meant they had little exposure (pun intended) to these intricacies before now.
