thanks for the kind feedback after some of my requests of the camera performance. by the way, my monitor is calibrated with spyder2pro, without it, i will never look much on a uncalibrated monitor, as a result, i found the samples of dmc-l1 posted here are extremely pleasant to look at, the colour is very life like, although i couldn't tell how is the actual condition of the pictures taken at the first place, but the colours are really life like and pleasant to look at!! I'm excited about this camera!

by the way, e330 viewfinder is very small and dark, i'm just curious if the optional magnifier will help to enlarge the viewfinder a lot??? and how is the effect of applying the magnifier onto dmc-l1??? does it helps actually? hope someone who had experience it and share comments here.

I feel you have some prejudice about 4/3 sensor and digital technology.

May be, you believe that, 4/3 sensor is smaller than full size, small pixel size, therefore noise is big. Why this picture has small noise, must be processed by noise reduction result.

Do you know one of cause of noise is photo diode size, not pixel size. Almost CMOS technology must make lot of circuit on chip, therefore photo diode size is only 30-35 % on cell/pixel. Kodak full frame CCD or Matsushita new-myvicon(Live Mos Sensor) is specialized this point, therefore 50% is photo diode.

4/3 sensor(exp. Kodak KAF-5101CE, Matsushita new-myvicon etc) and DMR sensor(Kodak KAF-10010CE) is similar noise performance with APS size or Full Size. But you can find more low noise performance at Canon camera. Canon has lot of noise reduction patent for CMOS, this performance is based on noise reduction technology, not real low noise.

Why Canon CMOS is full size, it is simple, the circuit is big, and therefore important keyword is cell size for keeping photo diode size. Size of photo diode is normal and good noise reduction on chip/image engine, this result is low noise. Not cell size.

This sample is not noise reduction max, and almost development software has explicit noise reduction, not implicit.

I'm not talking about theory; I'm talking about observation. Your ISO 400 image is noisy (relatively speaking of course). The ISO 400 pictures I'd seen from other 4/3" cameras are also noisy.

You're right, there's nothing special about that image. Definitely you'd not have been able to tell that it was shot with a Leica lens, in terms of resolution that is. But if even your Nikons look like that with ISO 400 RAW...

Hi Kazuo,

Would you rate the L1 viewfinder as substantially larger and/or brighter than that of the Oly E330?

BTW this is a post from Calvados, France to Calvados, Japan.

Cheers! drunk.gifclin d

I believe L1 and E330 has same viewfinder.

May be, almost optical design and optical device is same ?

But, all of semiconductor system and software is different.

L1 has good auto focus.

BTW, You know I enjoyed calvados at shinjuku tokyo :-)

Thank you your post.

All of my monitors are calibrated with gretagmacbeth eye-one.

All of samples white balance was neutralized by gretagmacbeth color checker mini neutral 4 or 5.

I feel L1 and E-330 has good color potential.

I agree with you, E-330 / L1 view finder is small, and dark.

But you can chose alternative, it is Live View.

I use OLYMPUS Magnifier Eyecup ME-1, and if dark environment I use Live view, not finder.

If use Live view, you can take picture with new position, exp on grand or table directly.

I’m sorry again; this sample of E-330 is mistake shot.

my E-330 use for under water photography only, therefore cameras setting is quite deferent from normal situation. I try resetting parameters, but I missing EV setting, it was -2EV, this setting is normal at under water situation. I notice this miss at development time, and I set up gain at development parameter, therefore noise flower is up at dark area.

I will retake E-330 sample shot.
