In need of help moving LR4, SEP2, Zenfolio from PC to Mac

I have decided to purchase the MacBook Pro 13" after years of PC use. I will keep my 3 year old 13" Sony Z series as my home (banking etc and work related MS office 2010) unit, and travel ( and have fun ) with the mbp.

Question: I have searched the fora but cannot find a recent answer. I only have LR4 installed on the pc, so I should be able to install it on my new unit. Most of my photos are saved on duplicate EHDs via LR. Will the Mac read files saved via the PC? How do I transfer the catalogue to the Mac. What is the best way to move old catalogues that are on my PC hard drive to the EHDs so LR can find them. Same questions for SEP and my Zenfolio site. I also have the latest iPad and an iPhone 5, so I have some experience with Apple. I have an m9, mm and someday an m240.

Thank you, in advance, for your answers. No reply is too basic and I welcome any words to the wise. I am a nurse, not a computer wiz. I forgot to mention, I like small laptops, don't play games, listen to minimal music except for a few classical favorites on iTunes, have a Nook for travel, hardly watch movies and lastly live 4 blocks away from the Apple store here in SF, which is next door to Fireside Camera, my local Leica store.

You need to deactivate LR and request a MAC registration number from Adobe. if you used up your activations. If you only used one activation contact Adobe as well. Your Mac will have no problem reading all file formats just like your PC did, so you can copy all your data files to your Mac without any problem.

I do not know, but you might get lucky if you got your LR through a Leica TAN number and used it only once. Maybe you can use the second activation for Mac and use the Sony the way you did and set up the Mac new.

This is a mid-educated answer, real experts will answer you more in-depth.

I would go ahead and download a trial version of LR on the new computer before de-activating on the old one. You should be able to use it for 30 days without using your Serial number. That way you can run parallel versions to make sure you're satisfied that all went well with the switch.

Also, you should be able to have LR activated on 2 computers simultaneously so you may not need to de-activate one. I have done this with all my versions of LR, however, I have not done it with a Mac and Pc at the same time. I don't know why they wouldn't allow that though.

On the official LR3 copy I bought from Amazon, it was clearly stated that the S/N was valid for a simultaneous installation on a PC AND on a Mac (but of course no more than 1 each).

I guess same applies for LR4.

As far as SEP2 is concerned, if it is an official version, you should have received the mail from Google stating that you are allowed to download the whole Nik Software suite for free.

Just select the Mac version on the download page and off you go.

Good luck. I am sure you'll enjoy your MBP.

Also, if you are using Jeffrey Friedl's Zenfolio plug in, if you still have your authorization number you should be able to download a new version from his website and use the same authorization number. If you don't have it, you can make a nominal contribution to him and get a new number. I use his plugin so I can't help if you're using a different plugin or uploader.

Good luck.

Thank you everyone for your help. My LR 4 still has one life left, as I have only loaded it on my laptop. I will take the suggestions though and start with the free trial. My SEP2 is an official version, and yes I received the email from Nik for the google collection, but have not used it. I am using Jeffrey Friedl's Zenfolio plug in, and I actually have my last activation code, but I will send in a new donation if necessary. I do not have CS6. Now I just need to work a little bit more OT and I will go to the Apple store and plunk down the $$$$.

Hi Kaethe,

Please, do yourself a favor and get as much SSD or Flash storage as is available or you can afford.

Don't get a harddrive. I think one can still get third party memory and max out memory cheaper that way.

Good luck.

When I moved LR from PC to Mac earlier this year I did the following:

- Searched the internet and found links to a couple of very useful step-by-step descriptions (see below)

- Exported the catalogue and photos to an external hard drive

- Installed a trial version of LR on the Mac

- Imported the catalogue and photos to the Mac

- Made sure all photos were linked correctly to folders

- Then activated the Mac LR version with my original license registration ID.

I believe this was the link I followed:
