wlaidlaw Posted March 30, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 30, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think there might be a communication issue between the SF58-D flash and the M240. I wonder if an FW update on flash is needed? Specifically, the lens focal length is coming up wrongly on the flash on the auto zoom setting. For example, using two factory coded lenses, a 75 Summarit is coming up as 105mm and a 35 Summilux is coming up as 75mm. The lens focal lengths show correctly on the camera information. The auto zoom works correctly on my M9. Is anyone else having this problem. I suppose I should report it officially to somebody at Leica. Any thoughts to whom? Maybe Andrea at Solms Service. Advertisement Posted March 30, 2013 Posted March 30, 2013 Hi wlaidlaw, Take a look here Communication issue SF58-D flash to M240 - FW update on flash needed?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
viramati Posted March 30, 2013 Share #2 Posted March 30, 2013 sounds like something you need to contact leica about and hope they give us an update either for the flash or the M. I don't have mine yet but I do use the SF58 quite a bit on the M9 so I hope it gets sorted quickly. Mind you I hardly ever use straight flash but nearly always bounce so doesn't effect me so much
wlaidlaw Posted March 30, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted March 30, 2013 David, I was hoping that someone might have an M240 and SF58, so that we could ascertain if this was a general or particular problem. I might give Jono a ring tomorrow to see if he has a 58. Wilson
Fgcm Posted March 30, 2013 Share #4 Posted March 30, 2013 Wilson, I'm in Cervinia for Easter vacation. I check for you on Monday evening when I'm back. I'm here with the little sf24 only. Last week I used sf58. I didn't notice any particular issue, but I didn't care about the display. Everything worked properly, but I can't say if anything was wrong with the flash zoom. wlaidlaw Posted March 31, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted March 31, 2013 I have sent a query off to Leica UK, who on past experience, will reply in around three weeks. I have therefore also copied it to the main customer care department, who tend to respond a little more rapidly. I have tried a whole lot of other coded lenses and the flash is consistently showing 2 focal length steps above what it should be showing. viramati Posted March 31, 2013 Share #6 Posted March 31, 2013 Indeed strange. I would imagine that it is more of a M firmware problem if it works ok with the M9

Wilson One question: are you keeping the lamp oriented straight forward? I'm not sure, but I remember that the sf58 could step up 2 focal length when the lamp is risen for bouncing flash. Check what happens when you move the lamp. Franco

Franco Franco, I made very sure that the bounce head was pointing straight forwards and cross checked on my M9, without moving the head, that it was reading properly on that. When you move it out of straight ahead, unlike the M9, the flash LCD just shows "A Zoom" with no focal length. The M240 has obviously sent some sort of update to the 58D, as there is now an additional mode shown of TTL-HSS for high shutter speed synchronisation. Wilson, the SF58 has had HSS capability all along (initially for the R9 AFAIK). It's not so much the M240 updating the flashgun with a new mode, as the flashgun displaying it because the camera can do it.
Fgcm Posted March 31, 2013 Share #10 Posted March 31, 2013 Wilson, tomorrow evening I check mine as soon as I'm back home. HSS mode works very well. You have to try it. It's great for filling in in daylight and for freezing moving things at 1/4000. Franco
viramati Posted March 31, 2013 Share #11 Posted March 31, 2013 Yes was reading the manual about HSS this is good news indeed for fill flash photography
Rick Posted March 31, 2013 Share #12 Posted March 31, 2013 Wilson - Confirmed. It seems to be an error. The M must be sending the wrong information to the SF-58. And, yes, it is off by two focal lengths. Rick

It makes me wonder what other glitches we may find, once the more complicated multi-function grip comes out. Wilson

wlaidlaw Posted April 1, 2013 Author Share #15 Posted April 1, 2013 I have now copied Jesko von Oeynhausen in on the emails sent to customer service, so that hopefully I don't get their stock response: "Send the units to us in Solms to be checked." One of the M240 Beta testers is also going to give Jesko a "heads up" on this problem. Wilson
wlaidlaw Posted April 2, 2013 Author Share #16 Posted April 2, 2013 Very quick response from Leica. They have tracked down the bug and a cure will be in a forthcoming firmware update. Wilson
