Televit and filters

I got myself a set with a televit and the telyt 400 and 560, both 5.6. The filters (series 7) are inserted in the Televit (never seen that before). It seems impossible to put protection filters on the two lenses (they both are placed on the Televit.

I have found a drawing of the Televit but not a manual (anleitung). Is there someone that can help me understanding the Televit better? The lenses are much better than I expected with good contrast and sharp (one must use a tripod)

Thx,

Jan Tromp

The Televit had its own manual, and some reprints can be found from some specialized dealers (example Leo's Camera Supply ) : basically, is a 3-parts system : the pistol grip with focusing knob (and a pushbotton which serves to release the focusing knob : in much used items the friction mechanism can be worn and doesn't act anymore - not a big problem) , the intermediate diaphragm unit, with f/stop presetting facility, and the lenshead(s) 400 and 560. It was made for both Leica M, with Visoflex II/III and for Leicaflex : only the first component is different (and , one could anyway use the Visoflex version on a Leicaflex, with the interposition of an adapter ring M female - R male bayonets).

In theory the Televit was engineered to use those long lenses NOT on tripod : Leitz did provide also a shoulder support, to be inserted into the Televit (there is a slot in the back of the first element) , which was very well made - adjustable to adapt to your arm's length : it had various modifications / versions during its production life.

,,, and, yes, filters can be mounted only into the slot of the focusing unit... there is no thread in the front ring... but they provided a cap to protect the front lens (and, also a "back cap" when the lens unit is dismounted from the Televit unit)

The two knobs at the left of the focusing unit have the function to preset two focus distances, so that one could skip quickly from one to the other... a feature useful expecially for sports photogs.

Thanks for this helpfull information. I have the shoulder support and tried the lenses without tripod but that's difficult (for me:-) It seems I'm not strong enough :-). I have the Visoflex 3 with two viewers. One horizontal and one vertical, the latter being nice when using the tripod.

The photo's do show the set very nice. I do have caps for the lenses and was trying to find protection filtes. Now I learned there are none.

Thank you all again for this help. I have the lenses with my Monichrom and the b/w seems to go very well with these old lenses.

Try with a M8 or M9 at 640 ASA 1/4000... ;)

The later version has the shoulder stock screwed to the bottom of the grip; a much better engineered construction.
