Rick Posted March 17, 2013 Share #3 Posted March 17, 2013 Luigi is correct. But, I had my 50 DR modified by DAG so it would work on my M9. You probably already understand that the lens binds on the M8 and M9 because the helicoid binds in the camera. The 50 DR has a stepped helicoid which needs the googles to accommodate the helicoid. The googles allowed the 50mm standard lens to focus closer than .7m. But, this lens needed a different helicoid and this version was dubbed the 50 DR. The goggles also have an optic that fits over the RF window and corrects for the near parallax. When I discovered that the M was going to have LV I sent my DR to DAG early last year to have the helicoid ground down so it would no longer bind on the M. It now will focus from infinity down to something like 20 inches. 14/4/12 Actually, when it is modified you gain the close focus feature on the M9/8. What you lose is the close focus rangefinder coupling. So, it will gain near focus on the M9/8 (and 4m to infinity). But, the range finder coupling stops as you pass through one meter and focus nearer. If, big if, the M10 has live view then the near focus would be very useable with live view. I think for me, this lens is a better choice for the future than the rigid. It would be nice to have that near focus and I am not a collector so, I don't really care if, in making it more functional for myself I make it worth less for a collector that won't see the lens until I am dead and gone. Maybe when people discover that photographers are modifying this lens to gain near focus on the M10 (I know, future speculation) it will become even more sought out and rare and even more expensive to buy. Also, I tried the coding settings and there isn't one for the Ver. II in the menu of the M9. But, the 11817 seems to give the most pleasing color (less blue/warmer) of all the 50mm f2.0 lens choices. It happens to be the Ver. III. I know some have commented that, just pick one... but, there are differences in what the camera outputs (or LR developes) even at 50mm. A Leica OUFRO adapter will take care of this problem since you have the live-view on the M240. (The rangefinder won't work for focusing with the extra spacing.) Is there any way to mount and test the lens without modifying it? Just make sure you move the lens over to its close focus range before mounting. Even if you don't have the goggles, you can do so by pressing the little "dot" at the top down while adjusting the focus. Works fine in live view, or via the rangefinder if you use the goggles.
