Shootist Posted March 29, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I happen to be in need of some more sensor cleaning fluid, Eclipse, and went to the copperhill images website to see if they sold just the fluid, which it doesn't seem they do. But while I was at that website I noticed there is a NEW Eclipse fluid out, Eclipse 2, and it is recommended to use this new fluid on the M8, along with other cameras listed at there site. I then did some Googling for Eclipse fluid and came up with a link to DPR about damage caused to a 5D Canon sensor with the older/original Eclipse fluid. It seems that certain cameras have a coating on the front (lens) side of the sensor cover glass and that the original Eclipse can damage that coating. So watch out if you continue to use the original Eclipse fluid on your M8 or 5D. So now I was looking for this new Eclipse 2 fluid for use on the M8 and found it at Micro Tools. Micro Tools has both a USA and Europe website so all forum members should be able to buy it. Micro Tools also has a kit of flexiclamp tools for working on Leica M camera. Now if they only had the new style rangefinder verticle adjustment tool.

gravastar Posted March 29, 2007 Share #3 Posted March 29, 2007 This requires futher investigation. Tin Oxide is a transparent electrically conductive coating applied to surfaces to prevent static build up. I see the Copper Hill Images site lists several older cameras whose sensors don't use this technology, or so I thought. Maybe Copperhill is supplying E2 by default for all cameras and the M8 is included. It would be to Leica's marketing advantage to announce the use of Tin Oxide coatings to minimise dust adhering to the sensor, if that's what they are doing. Bob. simardr Posted March 29, 2007 Share #4 Posted March 29, 2007 I have been trying to get Eclipse 2 in Canada but I have yet to find a supplier. Looks like Adorama and others will not ship Eclipse 2 solution outside of the US. Roger
RSL Posted March 29, 2007 Share #5 Posted March 29, 2007 Easy does it. Here's what "Cleaning Digital Cameras" has to say about Eclipse E2: Eclipse E2™ is the chemical formulation from Sony for cleaning the sensors of their Alpha series of cameras as they now have Tin Oxide Sensors. Other cameras with Tin Oxide Sensors include the Canon XTi/400D and 5D along with the Pentax K10D and it is recommended that you use the E2 on these also, Pros: This is the only chemical endorsed by Sony for cleaning their sensors. Dries extremely fast. Cons: The chemical used are flammable and cannot be shipped by air. Not for use on NON-Tin Oxide Sensors nor is for use on other critical optics. (Emphasis added) Better check out the information on Cleaning Digital Cameras - Introduction before you start using E2 on the M8 sensor.
jaapv Posted March 29, 2007 Share #6 Posted March 29, 2007 Might be better to stick with the Visible Dust product?
fotografr Posted March 29, 2007 Share #7 Posted March 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is there any indication that Leica uses this tin oxide coating on their sensors? I purchased a product called, Dust Aid, and they have issued a warning to not use it on the 5D sensor.
