Stuart, When setting up this V Lux 4, I thought had fixed it at `center weighting', After you comment, re-check and set it properly. Thank you, Btw: Still using the first battery from day one. George Only in that I think you could probably recover more detail in the highlights (what Stuart was referring to in the blazes) and the saturation seems cranked beyond what nature gives. I/We played with this for quite a while, using Lightroom, 4.? The newest. After posting them,,and viewing them here, it just glares out! Back to the drawing board. You're improvements, in Real life, on Friday, the Sun was very bright, I would have to say, about half way between your's and my posting, It is overcast today, so far, but if it clears, I will go to same horses and re-shoot them. With their Winter coats, they were very white. (and I was sober) 2.5 years ago, bought the DL5, and read Alexander S. White's book, using it this morning as reference to set new settings in V Lux 4. As suggested did download the Adobe PS book for LR 4 into my Nook. Cannot say how much I appreciate the suggestions from you other members here! Quickly, over many years of shooting, and showing the pics to friends who are the Real deal, they honestly said, "Sorry, George, they are only snapshots." Comparing mine with ones I view on -line here, mine are pathetic. So much more to learn, and so little time left, I guess? Quote: " I grow old learning new things." Anon. We in our little group are mostly amateurs, and if I must say, have likely been quite skilled and successful in our "day jobs" so don't be intimidated in the least! So no more talk of 'pathetic', right? Lightroom is quite powerful with Raw images if you just get a good grip on it's handling. I really enjoy the free instructional videos on the Adobe site and I commend them to you wholeheartedly. Also, overcast days are nothing to be avoided, quite the contrary. It's like walking into one giant gray-card and your exposures will actually be much easier to manipulate, pulling the full potential out of the Raw file. Midday sun is for sipping mint juleps on the veranda, not taking pictures. Those colors on the horses will be best exploited just after sunrise and just before sunset, make it easier on yourself! As I may have mentioned to you, I was not real happy with the files coming out of my PanaLeica FZ200 (Vlux4) so I sent it to ebay and picked up the PanaLeica FZ7 (Dlux6). The files are definitely better and the Macro is better as well; so don't put your D-Lux 5 in mothballs just yet. I am far from an expert but I try to pass on what little I've learned to the like-minded folks trying to enjoy this great pastime. I think some detail brought out in the highlights (a la Henry's work) really kicks this up several notches. I am at a point where I sold my D Lux4 and contemplating between a V Lux4 and DL6. Henry's comments on these two cameras help push me in the DL6 direction. I was always very happy with my DL4. The zoom and the EVF are attractive on the VL4. Ece I've got long glass for my Visoflex so I was not wowed by the V-Lux 4. If you don't feel the need for F.L. longer than 90mm, the D-Lux 6 is the more satisfying of the two. and if the lore is true, the internal software in the Leica should even outshine what my Panasonic delivers. Glad you like the book, it saved my sanity two years ago when I first started in digital photography with the M9 & LR3.
