Visoflex 1 with 45degree finder on m8?

Will a visoflex 1 (or 2) work on a m8 with the 45 degree viewer and or the straight chimney viewer?

The 45 deg finder PEGOO fits only a viso 1 and will definitely work on an M8 if it has the original bayonet fitting. Do not adapt a screw mount viso one. There is also a chimney finder for the viso 1. You will need a double cable release , screw on one end for the camera, and a collar type for the other end like the ones for screw mount cameras. The other options are a "cable release link" or manual control separately of viso and camera. Do not recommend latter.

 

I used to do portraits with the 45 and 125 mm Hector and it was wonderful.

 

Since the M8 is a crop sensor, you will need to make a mask with 17x23 mm opening. A viso 2 will also need masking. Factory masks are 1 mm small, therefore 17x23 rather than 18 x24. Ultra fine sharpie also works.

 

The 45 deg will not fit a viso 2 or 3. The chimney finder made for 2 or 3 works. Most viso 2 have an arm that will not contact the shutter, That leaves you with manual control of viso and camera.

 

Chimney finders are a pain for portrait format unless it is for viso 1 which allows for camera rotation 90 degrees keeping the finder on top which is how I used it for portraits.

 

An eyepiece from a viso 3 will clear the camera top, but not the straight back one from the 2.

 

Find a viso 2A and a straight eyepiece from a 3 , mask it down, and that works. That Is what I use on my M9. A viso 3 also works but the finger position is uncomfortable due to the long screw. unless you find a late red Leitz label one and remove the screw bottom to shorten it.

You don't say what you want to photograph, so the answer can only be general. The Viso's 1, 2 and 3 all have points in their favour for different applications. I am a big fan of them and have lenses from 65mm to 40cm and so am biased!

 

Not having an M8 I cannot be exact but I don't have a problem using screwmount Viso 1 with my M2 or M6 using the normal screw/bayonet converter, but the bayonet mount of the M8 might be different to other M series, which seems unlikely. Also, as Tobey says, if the shutter release on the M8 is in a different position to the other M series, the Viso 2 and 3 release screw will miss.

 

I have all three Viso's and don't have a problem with the long screw on the 3. I can see the arm coming down, in the corner of my eye, which I find useful. An advantage of the 3 is the ability to mount it as quickly as a lens; the 2 has to have the viewfinder slid on after mounting the Viso. You also have the benefit of quick, slow or locked up mirror. With Tobey's suggestion of a 2a body and 3 finder you might be searching a while or have to buy both units.

 

The Viso 2 or 3 is much easier to use freehand: the Viso 1 better on a tripod because of the double cable release, although I have the sports release for my 111f .

 

Probably the best solution is to find someone near you, or a shop, and try it out.

In that case, either a Viso 1 with bellows, or a Viso 3 with its bellows and the vertical finder. The bellows for the Viso 2 and 3 have an extra slide on the base that makes focussing easier in the macro range: the whole assemble moves, bellows, camera and all. The Viso 1 bellows has a seperate attachment (!) for this.

 

By using the Viso 3 rather than a 2, you can set it up so that as you press the cable release, the mirror moves up slowly, the Viso 2 only flicks up quickly just before exposure.

I have not used the V on digital, but did use both the II and III on film. Extremely bright finder and very accurate focus. I did not , however find the 65mm (first version) quite sharp enough.

not to adapt were Leicas instructions years ago, ie decades back. Perhaps it works sometimes, not always.

You can do a lot of combination with Viso's and M8, just 2 ex. illustrated here M8+Viso I and M8 + Viso II and 90° Viso III viewfinder, etc

If you are working on a tripod:

 

If you don't have a double cable release or the Visoflex I cable releases OZXVO or OZXVO-M you can lock up the mirror on the Visoflex I manually & use a separate standard cable release for the M.

 

No problem at all when you are using the rotating back.
