Projector tray identification

The lamp died of my friends Kindermann projector, and it turned out impossible to buy a new one.

 

And he has of course tons of trays like in the picture. Could you please tell me what kind of projectors who supports this kind of trays. So they can buy a used one.

Could you change the lamp-holder so a readily available lamp will fit?

There are a lot of different projectors that can use that tray. I don't know how hard it will be for you to find one.

this was used in Bell & Howell projectors of the late 50's early 60's, my dad had one

If you can read the three letter code on the top of the bulb you might be able to find old stock on line, should be something like DEK or DLH the code should begin with C, D or E

I usually hear these called "Hanimex trays." I purchased 12-20 of the on eBay for use with my Vivitar slide projector - I bought the Viv about 5 years ago & it takes both the round "Carousel" type on top and has a slot/channel on the right-hand side for these. The big-name user of these is....Leitz. Look around for a Pradovit in the used market. When I was growing up the round Carousel-type were the coming thing, but "old-timers" and non-Americans sometimes prefer the "stick-type" or "Hanimex". Some of the projectors took the Carousel rounds in the same slot as the Hanimex-boxes, but on-edge, like a big circus Ferris wheel.

Maybe that's a good idea if there is no other solution. But my idea was to to buy them a used one. I see that Leica projectors are down to 30 Euros in Sweden.

I don't think this is quite right. Every Pradovit I've seen took the "universal" German DIN 108 magazines (which you load from the top, not the side like the Hanimex ones), and these are the ones that Leitz catalogued (37863, 37835, 37844, 37855 in the 1975 general catalogue. There's also a big difference between the circular magazines for the Kodak Carousel projectors (which sit horizontally on top of the projector) and the circular Hanimex-style magazines (which sit like a Ferris wheel in the trough at the side of the projector). Again, the Carousel magazines load from the top and the Hanimex from the side.

The link Alan posted lists several brands. There's also Hanimex, although at least some Hanimex-branded projectors took the "Universal" DIN 108 magazines. I believe that the Braun Paximat projectors also used Hanimex-style magazines, though other (later?) Braun projectors used the "Universal" ones.

 

One way to tell the difference from a photo is to look at the base of the channel in which the magazine sits. The Hanimex-style magazines have a flat, closed underside and the channel they fit in also has a basically flat bottom, maybe with some small ridges of equal height. The magazine may also be tilted slightly to the right (viewing from behind the projector). The "Universal" magazines have an open underside with a large channel for a ramp that raises the slides from their resting position so they can be moved horizontally into the projector gate. In most pictures of the projectors this ramp is visible. It might be worth contacting widescreen-centre.co.uk (based in central London) who keep a fair vaiety of ancient projector's bulbs. However, at ~€36 (£30) for a common 300W bulb it might be cheaper to buy a seond hand Leitz projector in Sweden!
